Pursuit

Twenty minutes later, Rebecca reached the closest gate to Central Park. She ran all the way there so she took a few moments to catch her breath. It was then that she saw Black Wing flying overhead.

Rebecca followed Black Wing as closely as she could. After a few minutes of the pursuit, he landed in an alleyway six blocks from Central Park.

"Must really be confident not to run further," Rebecca thought to herself. She thought she had him.

She slowly approached the alleyway, and then hid behind a dumpster. She darted her eyes around looking at every nook and crevice of the alleyway.

Nothing.

Black Wing was nowhere to be seen. How could that be?!

It was precisely five seconds between when Black Wing descended behind the buildings, and Rebecca reaching the alleyway. There's no way he could've escaped within those few moments.

She looked around once more. All she could see were a few homeless people sleeping at either side of the alley. At the far side there was a man, wearing a trench coat and carrying a suitcase, exiting the alleyway from the other side.

It struck Rebecca as strange. A man with appearance such as his has no business being around such a filthy alley. She looked around once again to make sure she hasn't missed anything, and then decided to follow that strange man. He could be working with Black Wing. Heck, he could be Black Wing himself for all she knew. Either way, that man is the only promising lead she had.

She saw a reflection on a shop out on the street. It showed the man was wearing a full three-piece suit under that trench coat. There's no way anyone can change into a full suit in less than five seconds, it usually took her a full two minutes to get into a dress.

After five minutes of walking he finally stopped at a restaurant called Noblesse.

"Well, isn't that pompous," said Rebecca sarcastically.

The man sat down after the waiter took his coat and then started looking at the menu.

Rebecca took the opportunity and entered an alleyway that had a direct view of the restaurant. As she began to unzip her uniform she felt a gaze on her back, she looked around and found two homeless men gawking at her with open mouths.

Her hand went inside her uniform and pulled out a note.

"Here's a fifty for the first one of you to give me their coat."

Rebecca always wore some thin pedestrian clothes under her uniform in case she had to get rid of her superhero look for precisely such situations as the one she's in right now.

She wore the Jacket she got from one of the homeless men over a t-shirt and shorts, and put her uniform in a rather large pocket at the front of the jacket.

She sat there, constantly blowing on her hand because of the cold. She was determined to see where this man leads her. And surely enough, after two hours of waiting patiently behind a dumpster passed, two black cars with tainted windows stopped in front of the restaurant.

Four men came out of the front doors of both cars. They were stereotypical bodyguards; matching black suits, shades, and the ever so iconic ear pieces. One from each car went to open the rear door, most likely to let out their employers.

A rather chubby looking man came out of the front car. He looked to be in his sixties and wore an expensive and sparkly looking brown suit.

The man from the other car went out from the side facing the restaurant so Rebecca couldn't get a proper look at him.

She felt like she had seen the first man somewhere before, but she couldn't place where. She committed his appearance to memory and decided to check him out later. She focused on the second man but she still couldn't see his face clearly, the cars and the security man by his side blocked his appearance pretty well.

When the two men entered the restaurant, one of the security men followed, while the rest formed a formation outside. Rebecca couldn't move into position to get a better look, so she just stayed there, waiting yet again.

Another three hours passed until the men left the restaurant. Straight after the cars left and cleared the view, Rebecca saw the man she followed get up from his seat and head for the door. One of the waiters helped him put on his trench coat and then the man left.

It was already 7pm and it was dark, but Rebecca was still resolute about following the man.

She followed him for another ten minutes. It seems like he was heading uptown.

Suddenly *ring, ring, ring*

Rebecca's phone rang loudly. She even had it on a classical ringtone because it was louder which was better for Rebecca on the account of her hardly hearing her phone when it rings.

"Shit!" Rebecca scrambled to shut off the phone before the man noticed it. When she finally managed to shut the phone up, which seemed like a much more arduous task than usual, she looked up to see whether the sudden eruption ruined her nearly six hours of pursuit. Sure enough, the man she was following disappeared without a trace. She ran up to where he was a moment ago and looked in all directions. He was gone.

"GOD DAMMIT!!" Rebecca was furious. All her work throughout this day came to nothing. The man was probably going home and she was gonna find out where he lived, but it was all ruined by whoever called her just now. She looked at her phone to see who called her just now.

"Damn it Janine! I will kill you when I see you!!" said Rebecca in a low voice. Janine was Rebecca's Technical advisor. Her job was to help Rebecca with surveillance and suggest tactics whenever she was in the field. Janine was a little eccentric and outgoing, weird combination for sure. She would always try to rope Rebecca into one of her strange night outs; going to places like technology underground markets, black markets for illegal exotic food, and she even somehow found an underground spa.

For now, Rebecca turned around and started to head home, she might not have found where that man lived, but she already had enough from the restaurant. Now all she needs to do is find out his identity, and the identity of the men he met. Then, the glory of her superhero days may begin.
