Venison Hamburger Hash by Amanda Payne

Venison Hamburger Hash is a budget-friendly comfort food recipe made with ground venison, onions, potatoes, cream of mushroom soup, and cheddar cheese. This is an American meal and is typically served for lunch and dinner. This recipe works as the main course or a side dish.

You can change it up however you like by adding or taking away certain ingredients. Any variety of bell peppers is good. Sweet corn and precooked bacon broken into small pieces are delicious too. You could add chili seasoning or other types of herbs. You could also use a different cheese other than cheddar.

One of my favorite ways to change the recipe is to leave the cream of mushroom soup out. I bake the potatoes in the oven and then add and mid in the ground burger and onions. Then add fried eggs on top. It's so good!

If you don't have any ground venison, you can use other meats. So far, I have tried it with ground beef and ground turkey, and it turned out great. Play around with the recipe and make it your own. You can never go wrong with meat and potatoes.

If you're on a diet and you make changes to this recipe, remember to recalculate the nutritional information.

Venison Hamburger Hash Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of venison, ground
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 5 cups of potatoes, diced
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 2 10.75 ounce cans cream of mushroom soup, no water added
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

Getting It Done:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Peel and chop the potatoes and onions.
  3. Brown and scramble the ground venison and onion in a skillet on medium-high heat. When done, add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Layer a casserole dish with the potatoes and add butter.
  5. Pour the venison burger and onions over the potatoes.
  6. Mix together 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and the cans of cream of mushroom soup. Do not add water to the soup.
  7. Heat the soup in the microwave for about 30 seconds to help it spread more easily.
  8. Spread the mushroom soup over the layer of venison burger and onions.
  9. Press the Venison Hamburger Hash into a flat layer.
  10. Cover the casserole dish with foil. Bake for about 40 minutes at 375°F or until the potatoes are done. You can check for doneness by poking a potato with a toothpick. If it enters without resistance, they are done.
  11. Remove the dish from the oven and top with the remaining cup of cheddar cheese and pop it back in until the cheese melts.
  12. Serve hot and enjoy!
