At the Tugu View Cafe, the curry broth alone is so good that we had to write an entire article about it. Using only large heads from red snapper (Ikan Merah), their famous recipe is a Malay-style curry that has earned a devoted following among locals and visitors alike. The mother pot of curry is filled with huge chunks of spongy brown tofu and lady fingers, which absorb the rich, aromatic broth and add incredible texture to the dish. Before serving, they shred huge amounts of fresh sour mango and spicy ginger to use as a garnish, adding a bright, tangy contrast to the deep, savory flavors of the curry.

Just gazing at that fish head in the beautiful stainless steel serving bowl, I think there must be an entire liter of delicious curry broth they are ladling over every fish head here. The curry is thick, fragrant, and deeply satisfying, with a complexity that comes from hours of simmering and the careful balance of spices. As anyone who loves a good fish head will share with you, the fun part is digging around inside this delicacy, searching out the most flavorful bites of meat that any fish has to offer. The cheeks, the collar, and the gelatinous bits around the eyes are all treasures waiting to be discovered, each offering a unique texture and taste.

However, you are not coming only for the fish head, as this restaurant has perfected a curry broth that is out of this world full of flavor. Be sure to ask the attendant manning the pot for at least one extra giant ladleful of that curry broth, no matter if you are here to order the fried chicken, fried fish, or any of the dishes they have to go with rice (nasi campur). The broth is so good that you will find yourself wanting to soak up every last drop with your rice, and the staff are always happy to oblige with an extra ladleful.

Tugu View Cafe also has an amazing selection of nasi campur, a huge display of fried chicken and chicken parts, and finally, some pretty massively delicious Red Snapper fish heads as well. Besides the huge selection of curried meat and vegetables over rice, they also have a great herbal salad mixed with coconut meat and chili peppers, called kerabu, which is pictured above. This cold salad features bean sprouts, onions, and fresh herbs, offering a refreshing contrast to the rich, spicy curries. Finally, they offer several different types of spicy sambal dipping sauce, all of which are made in-house. Each sambal has its own distinct flavor profile, from fiery hot to tangy and sweet, allowing diners to customize their meal to their liking.

The cafe takes its name from the famous Tugu Monument (Tugu Negara) located slightly down from the restaurant, and it is only fitting that a tribute to Malaysia's warriors is so near to food so delicious. The whole country should be proud. The proximity to this national landmark adds a layer of significance to the dining experience, reminding visitors of the rich history and culture that make Malaysia so special.

One practical note for visitors: the actual entrance to the restaurant is not so obvious if you are coming by foot. You need to walk through the ice cream shop that seems to be blocking the stairs. However, if you are in a taxi, there is no problem, as all of the taxi drivers we talked to on this trip knew this restaurant by name. This local recognition is a testament to the cafe's popularity and reputation among Kuala Lumpur's residents.

Tugu View Cafe is open from 7 AM to 6 PM and is closed on Sundays. The prices are reasonable, with an entire meal for a group coming to approximately RM 144 (US$35), which includes a gigantic fish head. Considering the quality and portion sizes, this represents exceptional value. Now that is a meal of Malaysian local food so good, it is worth building a monument to celebrate.

Dining at Tugu View Cafe is more than just a meal it is a culinary journey through the flavors of Malaysia. The rich, aromatic curry, the tender fish head, the vibrant nasi campur, and the refreshing kerabu all come together to create a feast that is both comforting and exciting. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned local, a meal here will leave you with lasting memories and a deep appreciation for the diversity and richness of Malaysian cuisine. So if you find yourself in Kuala Lumpur, make sure to seek out this hidden gem near the Tugu Negara. It is a dining experience that is truly monumental.
