Trusting the Hype: Why Next Gen Kopitiam’s Duck Egg Char Kway Teow and Golden Toast Are Worth the Trip to Maluri

A first-time visit to this fully air-conditioned Cheras gem proves that a friend’s food recommendation is rarely wrong, especially when it involves rich salted cham, a surprising salted egg yolk toast, and a masterful take on a classic hawker staple.

In the world of food hunting, there is no compass more reliable than a trusted friend’s recommendation. So, when a colleague who works nearby swore by the duck egg char kway teow at Next Gen Kopitiam in Maluri, Cheras, I didn’t hesitate. Despite being first-time visitors, we arrived with a vote of absolute confidence and ordered not one, but two plates of the famed noodles.

Navigating to the spot is part of the adventure. Parking in this bustling area is, quite frankly, horrendous, so taking the MRT and walking a few minutes is the sanity-saving choice. Upon arrival, I was initially taken aback to see a fully air-conditioned dining area inside the shop. My cynical side briefly wondered: Is my friend’s loyalty due to the comfort of the air-con, or the actual char of the kway teow?

But I’ve learned to have faith in my friends’ palates until proven otherwise. And as it turns out, I was rarely happier to be proven wrong.

The Perfect Brew: Salted Cham
Before the main event, the requisite cups of cham (coffee mixed with tea) arrived, one hot, one iced. These were not your average, watered-down kopitiam brews. They were rich, deeply raw, and intensely robust. Upon tasting, we immediately noticed a subtle but brilliant addition: a pinch of salt. This salted cham hits the spot perfectly, cutting through the bitterness of the coffee and enhancing the overall depth of flavor, especially in the refreshing iced version.

The Surprise Star: Golden Toast
Next Gen Kopitiam offers the standard, comforting range of roti bakar, including the redoubtable classic butter and kaya. However, their true signature is the Golden Toast, topped with a generous layer of salted egg yolk.

At first glance, it sounds gimmicky, and the presentation, a monotonous, bright orange layer reminiscent of mentaiko, doesn’t exactly scream "culinary masterpiece." But looks can be deceiving. Rather than being overwhelmingly salty, the creamy topping is a masterful salty-sweet symphony that parallels and perfectly complements the salted cham.

The true magic lies in the texture. The crust is lightly toasted, but as you tear into the bread, you realize the crumb inside is almost steamed and pillowy soft, likely thanks to the impermeable, moisture-locking layer of salted egg yolk cream. This contrast between a delicate crust and a fluffy, steamed interior is a textural revelation. Enjoy it on its own, dip it into the luxurious cham, or plunge it into the "liquid manna" of their perfectly runny half-boiled eggs.

The Main Event: Duck Egg Char Kway Teow
Finally, it was time for the dish that brought us here. The char kway teow stall is run single-handedly by Uncle Wong, an admirable feat of stamina and skill, considering most other stalls in the kopitiam rely on helpers. Because he fries each plate individually, the dishes might arrive at slightly different times, but you are guaranteed absolute freshness and undivided attention to your specific order.

I typically prefer a "drier" style of char kway teow, and I must admit, Uncle Wong’s version leans slightly wetter than the traditional Penang or KL standard. However, this is where his expertise shines. The slight moisture is not a flaw; it’s a feature. Every flat rice noodle strand is beautifully coated in a glossy, savory glaze, resulting in a bite that is remarkably tender yet still packed with a fierce, smoky wok hei. The richness of the duck egg binds the ingredients together, elevating the dish from a standard hawker fare to something truly special. It is far more "marvellous" than it is "moist," delivering a deeply satisfying, flavor-forward experience.

The Verdict
Leaving Next Gen Kopitiam, I was reminded of yet another reason to keep following the culinary advice of my friends. I am now convinced they are even bigger gluttons than I am, and in the food world, that is the highest praise possible. Whether you are seeking refuge from the heat in their air-conditioned dining room or hunting for a masterfully executed plate of duck egg char kway teow, this Maluri gem is well worth the trip.
