You can always make delicious smoked meats on an all-purpose grill. However, if you want to get the most fantastic, smoky flavors out of your turkey, ribs, salmon, pork, and different cuts of beef like ribs, roast, or steak, a smoker is one to get.

The only problem is that smokers come in different types, and your choices can be endless. And although all smokers work the same, choosing one will always depend on what would work for you the best.

So, here are some things you need to consider:

1. Your Budget

First of all, you need to consider how much you’re willing to spend on a smoker. This way, you’ll be able to narrow down your choices quickly as you’d get to filter out smokers above your budget range.

If you have a budget within $200-$500, you’ll already have many options. However, you may want to avoid choosing a smoker with too many features as quality may not already be great here.

If you have a budget of more than that, especially if it’s past $1000, you can go for smokers under the best brands. You’ll also get to pick out interesting features.

2. Type of Fuel

Just like with grills, you also have variable options for fuel in smokers. You have charcoal smokers, electric smokers, gas smokers, and pellet smokers. Though each may function almost the same, the difference is usually detected in the flavor.

Charcoal Smokers are probably the best choice for those who master smoking. These smokers utilize a combination of wood and charcoal to produce interesting flavors on your meat. It’s also more on the affordable side, but when it comes to controlling heat, that’s where the real challenge comes in.

Electric Smokers use electricity to function, which means they use a lot of energy. When it comes to controlling temperature, these smokers are the most consistent. However, out of all the fuel options, these smokers produce the least smoky flavor.

Gas Smokers are the best choice for beginners. When it comes to performance, it’s in between the charcoal and electric smokers. It’s easier to control compared to charcoal and produces better flavor compared to electric-types.

Pellet Smokers are modernized versions of charcoal smokers. They utilize electricity or gas to burn wood pellets, so you get to control it easily but can still produce smoky flavors you’re looking for a charcoal smoker.

3. Size

Smokers also come in different sizes, so make sure to choose wisely and only buy what you need. Think about how many people you’re serving and what meat cuts you are serving.

If you’re only serving your family for weekend BBQs, then buy a size that will serve your family. If you’re planning to prepare for parties or join contests, go for a larger smoker.

Most manufacturers will have a guide on the smokers’ sizing and how much meat you can cook. You can base your decision there, too.

4. Design and Shape

Other than the size, design and style are also important. Again, try to consider the purpose of the smoker.

If you wish to buy a smoker built for camping or tailgating, go for a compact or space-saving smoker. These smokers also usually come with wheels so that you can transfer them from one place to another with ease.

Just take note that for portable options, the best would be charcoal and pellet grills, as these won’t need electricity to function. A gas-type is good, too, but you would also need to bring a propane tank to use that.

You should also think about the materials used, workmanship, and the durability of the smoker. Regardless of your budget, always make sure that the smoker you’re buying comes with high-quality materials. They must be stable, no hazards that may cause injury, and it’s built to last longer.

5. Warranty and Support

Lastly, don’t forget to check the terms and warranty of the smoker. This is what will make your purchase more worth it. Always go with one that has the most favorable conditions. It will also help to check out reviews about the smoker and stay away from those with negative reviews, particularly about the service.
