The Hotdog King

the ultimate weiner experience

Lully's Hotdogs are a legend throughout the lower mainland in British Columbia, Canada. Nestled within the humble parking lot of Abbotsford's Canadian Tire is the best food truck experience you will ever have.

People literally drive from hours away to come and experience the magic of these dogs. I have friends who fly in from out of province and request this hotdog as their first meal upon arrival, and their final meal before departure.

behold, ye olde food truck

A 4.9 star rating and 169 reviews on Google Maps doesn't lie.

But what makes these weiners a cut above the rest? Aren't hotdogs just meat, and bun, and toppings? Don't be deceived by the simplicity of this dish, my friends.

The Montreal hotdogs are a foot long, the pretzel buns are from New York, and the toppings are made from scratch by the owner himself: from the mayo, to the chimchurri, to the relish. He's obsessed with having the best of everything, sourcing his ingredients from all over North America to get that perfect taste, that perfect texture, that makes his weiners so addicting.

get. in. my. mouth.

There's a whole art to his dogs. When you walk up to his stand he'll size you up, then somehow he'll just know what you need on your dog. He can read it in your weiner aura, or something. Personally, I like my dogs free of condimentation so I can properly savour the juicy meat, but to each their own.

While you wait for him to cook up your hot dog delicacy, you can read all the signage on proper hotdog culture. Make sure you adere to the rules.

might want to write these down...

For some reason, he has a personal vendetta against ketchup. Woe to you if you even mention ketchup around him. Don't do it. If you ask him for ketchup, he'll kick you out.

However, if you mention you're a fan of Manchester United, you'll get a discount. #protip

The thing about excellent food is, it's not cheap. His only 1-star rating says, "Good hotdog but $11 for meat and bread is ridiclous."

So he had that review made onto a t-shirt.

Skully White is the owner and operator of this magical food truck, and has been for the last five years. He's well known for his prickly disposition, his hilarious attitude, and his passion for his craft.

the master at work

On top of being a weiner efficianado, he's also an extremely good human. Like, really good. You can read the full article here.

In 2019 he raised $5,000 for Jumpstart. In 2019 and 2020 he gave out 1,000 free hotdogs-- including 350 to each police officer and firefighter in Abbotsford. And every Christmas he sponsors a family in need to provide them with gifts and food.

Tim Hiscock was a regular customer of Lully's Food Truck, often frequenting with his wife Cindy. Tim and Cindy didn't even know Skully's name, though they'd laugh and joke around whenever they popped by for a meal. Tim's health began to decline, and his visits to the stand grew less regular. Eventually he found out that his diabetes had taken a turn for the worse, and his kindeys were failing. Cindy and Tim visited Skully's hotdog stand one last time, since he was put on a strict diet, and ended up telling Skully about his health problems, and that he'd need a new kidney.

White didn’t know his blood type, but he didn’t hesitate.

“All right. Well, if I match, it’s yours,” he told Hiscock.

It turns out, Skully was a match.

On December 14, 2020 Skully donated his kidney to Tim.

looks like a hero to me!

Since then, Skully has started a campaign called "It's For the People" where they track down people in need of kidneys and people willing to be donors and help match them up. As of January 2021 he has ten people in need of kidneys and twelve people willing to be donors going through the process of making someone's life a little better.

And so, if you want the best hotdog experience in the world, served by a great human being, then look no further. It's worth venturing out of Vancouver and into the Fraser Valley, I promise.
