The detailed report made by the World Health Organization (WHO) gives a clear overview of the fact that the details on health effects that are associated with the TDS in drinking water are still not available.

There are no guidelines that have been made for the ideal TDS amount in drinking water. There are several factors due to which the TDS level rises in the water. In the areas where the amount of TDS is higher than the normal condition, it must get the individual constituents to be identified.

BSI or The Bureau of Indian Standards is the national organization that sets the guidelines to define the quality of drinking water. The limit set by BSI for the TDS amount in water is 500 mg/L.

It has also mentioned that in this case, if no other alternative source is available then this limit can be relaxed up to 2000 mg/L.

Besides, BIS suggests that if the amount of TDS in water exceeds 500 mg/L then this may result in the degraded acceptable taste and also may cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Even the water with a TDS level below 50 is not suitable for the drinking process because this water lacks several essential minerals. The water with a TDS level of 50-150 mg/L is still acceptable but the one which is considered the most ideal is 80-150 mg/L.

The TDS value of the purified water through a RO is majorly above 80 mg/L and below 150 to 100mg/L. In this case, if you are highly attentive towards cardiovascular fitness then the TDS value in the range of 150-250 mg/L is ideal.

Most home purifiers are not able to purify the water with a TDS value above 2000 mg/L so better to avoid it for drinking purposes.

How can you measure the TDS level in drinking water in Mysore?

To measure TDS, you can use two of the available methods that are: gravimetric analysis and conductivity.

Gravimetric Method

To get an accurate measure of the TDS, you can use the gravimetric method which is a time-consuming method. The process used in this method is, the evaporated liquid solvent or water, and the weight of the remaining particles are measured to calculate TDS. This method can be best used at the time when the inorganic salts are the major constituent of TDS and also in the case of high TDS concentration.

Electrical Conductivity

Electrical Conductivity is the easiest as well as the popular method to find out the TDS level of the drinking water. The principle used here is that the conductivity of the water is directly proportional to the concentration of the ionized particles in the water. Although the gravimetric method is the more accurate method than this to determine the value of TDS in water, still this method is the easiest and the fastest one.

What are the ways to reduce TDS level in Water?

You can remove TDS is water following any of the 3 major ways are described below:

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO purifiers are the most popular way to purify your water. This technology assists you to get rid of the maximum solid particles that are present in the water. The RO purification process eliminates all the impurities and also the essential minerals and hazardous metals.

Reverse osmosis majorly depends on the principle of osmosis and uses a specially designed membrane with very minute pores that are as small as 0.0001 microns. These small pores eliminate all the solid particles or the impurities and only allow water molecules to pass through them. RO is the most effective way to decrease the TDS level as it is capable of decreasing the TDS level by 90-99%.

Distillation

Distillation is similar to evaporation. In distillation, the contaminants of the water are removed by boiling the water to produce steam. In this process, the water is boiled to convert it into the water vapor form, the rest of the impurities fail to evaporate and the water vapor rises to a coll surface and cools down, and condenses back in the liquid form. This is how distillation helps in separating the dissolved impurities.

Deionization

Deionization processes can also be referred to as ion exchange methods. In this process, you need to use ion-exchange resins to exchange water ions with the charged ions. In this process, you will get very pure water that is similar to the distilled water. This process is more advantageous than the distillation because it is quicker and also does not yield in scale build-up.

The process which is most favorable to be used in the homes is Reverse Osmosis (RO) to decrease the amount of TDS from drinking water.

Conclusion

● The total amount of minerals, metals, and chemicals, and their kind majorly defines whether the TDS level of your water is a matter of worry or not. But determining such minute impurities is not as easy as determining the TDS level since it will require more advanced testing.

● The TDS value not only indicates the purity of your water but also defines how contaminated your water is. You can consider TDS as one of the purity indicators of water. Various contaminants can be found in your water such as mud, dust, rust, sand, bacteria, viruses, cysts, and more.

● The purification technology majorly depends on the source and the quality of the water. You can also get the other purifying methods in the buying guide of water purifiers.
