Sloppy Joes by Amanda Payne

Don't get your sloppy joe sauce from a store-bought can. Use this simple homemade recipe.

These Sloppy Joes are made using delicious spices, crushed tomatoes, and ground meat. They go well with chips or a salad and are great as leftovers.

Sloppy Joe Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of ground venison (or other ground meat)
  • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 large onion, diced
  • 3 teaspoons of garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons of celery flakes
  • 2 teaspoons of chili powder
  • 2 cups of crushed tomatoes in purée
  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns (I used Arnold Hamburger Buns with Sesame Seeds)

Getting It Done:

  1. Heat a large skillet to medium heat and fry the ground meat until no longer pink. Scramble and break it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if needed.
  2. Chop the bell pepper and onion while the meat is frying.
  3. Add the bell pepper, onion, minced garlic, and celery flakes to the ground meat. Cook until the veggies are tender or somewhat transparent.
  4. Add 2 teaspoons of chili powder, 2 cups of crushed tomatoes in purée, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
  5. Mix well and let it simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
  6. Put 1/2 cup of the Sloppy Joe meat on each bun and serve hot.

I can't make Sloppy Joes without singing “Lunchlady Land” by Adam Sandler, so I'll share this video so you can sing it, too.

Now, wasn't that fun!

You can use whatever type of ground meat you'd like. Venison, beef, chicken, and turkey work well.

If you have any leftover Sloppy Joe meat, don't throw it out. You can eat it the next day as leftovers or make another recipe with it the next day. One recipe that I love is Sloppy Joe Hash. Chop potatoes and bake them on a cookie sheet at 375°F. Heat the leftover Sloppy Joes until warm. Once the potatoes are done, sprinkle the meat over them and top with cheddar cheese. Pop it back in the oven until bubbly.

You can also make a Shepherd's Pie with leftover Sloppy Joes. Add some veggies to the meat sauce, top with mashed potatoes, and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes or until bubbly.
