Mushrooms liked by few hated by many , I think they get a awful bad reputation for something so cute and tasty.
However I’m sure while saying that there are people out there who would be horrified that I find truffle disgusting or maybe like with mushrooms I just haven’t had them in the right dish or the right mushroom/ truffle.
Lets look at the most common types of mushrooms.
I personally don’t forage but that’s doesn’t mean you can’t , I definitely recommend taking a few courses from a professional and learning the proper way to identify mushrooms and other fungi while foraging Before beginning that journey though . Also please understand that just because a wild mushroom may look similar to a mushroom featured in this article it could just be very closely related and looked similar. Eating unproperly identified mushrooms can leadl to serious medical issues so it is recommended that you do not consume anything outside Until you confirm its type.
Now it’s time to learn the diffference between portobello and porcini or Mai take and morel and spotlight how you Caen use them at your table.
For cooking choose smaller mushrooms , for stuffing choose those with large caps , even though some mushrooms may be used together or interchangeably in some recipes, each type imparts slightly different flavors and has ideal uses.
White Button
A white button mushroom is the most commonly used and seen in the grocery stores and a majority of recipes. They are mild and versatile they mix well withi other mushrooms and vegetables , are commonly used on pizzas , and are a great classic for salads or pastas.
Chanterelle
Chanterelle mushrooms have. A nutty and delicate flavor profile. They are excellent for roasting or sautéing . You can add sautéed chenterelles to quiche or scrambled eggs for a fun addition and flavor.
Cremini
Cremini mushrooms are firm and flavorful , they stand up to almost any cooking method and mix well with other mushrooms , you I can roast or sauté for a satisfying side, my favorite it to fry up diced bacon add 2 tbsp butter , slice crimini mushrooms and green beans. Sauté for about 5 minutes and you’re left with a hiealth yummy side dish.
Shitake
Shitake mushrooms are savory and satisfying, they are often called super soup mushrooms as they can stand up to long cooking times, you should always remove the stems of these before cooking them.
Oyster
Oyster mushrooms are like a shy niece or nephew, they are mild and sweet ,you need To cook them briefly to preserve their delicate flavor. Add to omelets , quick soups and stir fries.
Enoki
These small groups of mushrooms are delicate with a mild sweet taste, their slightly crunchy texture make them best for raw salads , floating on soups or tossing into a stir fry just before serving.
Porcini
Porcini mushrooms are robust and woody in flavor , hearty flavor for long simmering dishes like. Pastas sauce or risotto you can also roast and toss with your favorite warm grain.
Morel
Morel mushrooms are intense and earthy they are considered a wild mushroom and have a unique honeycombed cap the standard use for them is to sauté or add to creamed sauces.
Portbello
Portobello are rich and heart and large ! They have substantial flavor that’s great for roasting grilling and even stuffing , for meatless mains you can roast them and stuff with greens l and warm grains like rice.
Truffle
There has been some debate about rather a truffle is a mushroom and while it is a fungi , the difference between truffles and mushroom. Sis that truffles grow below the surface of dirt.
Truffles usually have a hefty price tag attached and the flavor definitely isnt for everyone and can change varying what dish it is added too.
Truffles are fragrant and flavorful, you can tuck slice of black truffle under the skin of poultry while roasting it or create cheesy white truffle over pasta or risotto. While they aren’t my personal favorite there are many people who enjoy them in various ways.

Mushroom Storage Tip
Refrigerate unwashed fresh mushroom s in a paper bag or their original container and place them on a shelf rather than in a high humid produce drawer, the remain freshest when neither too dry, or too moist so avoid storing them in airtight plastics. Use soon after purchase so they remian blemish free and firm as well don tabsorb odors or flavors from other fridge foods.
