A French Press is a circular container with a plunger and a built-in filter and screen that pushes heated water into ground coffee. The French press has become a much-favoured method of many coffee enthusiasts all across the world. The resulting, robust, intense flavour is what makes the French Press a daily choice for many.

Step 1

The secret to brewing the best coffee is to select the most ideal choice of grind. Medium is considered the best type, with the best consistency throughout. Very rough grinds may obstruct the filter, whereas the extremely fine will move through it clouding the effects.

Step 2

To start using the French Press place the container on a bare, even surface. Then press the handle tightly, next draw out the plunger.

Combine a full tablespoon of around 7-8 grams of coffee grinds to the container and add 6.7 oz or 200 ml of water. Then add warm water not boiling water inside the pot, and lightly stir it. After which, insert the plunger into the pot only above the water and the ground coffee. Let it brew for at least 3 to 4 minutes before plunging it. After the time has lapsed you can slowly push the plunger down, using even pressure. Following every use, clean the container with water and a gentle cleanser, and dry completely before putting it away.

Step 3

To get the ideal cup of coffee according to the barista's the water to coffee ratio should be 15.1. For every 600 grams of water, you should add 40 grams of ground coffee. The temperature should be at 202 F, and the brew time is exactly at 4.27. If hand grinding your beans the setting should be at 6-6.5. One basic tip to keep in mind is to use a measuring scale to weigh out the water and the coffee. Consistency is needed if you want to make the perfect cup with your French Press. Invest in a good grinder, so you can grind it to the desired texture. As too many fine grounds will muddy the final result. Make sure to warm up the container and the coffee cups as well before pouring in the coffee.

Step 4

With many French Press brands in the market, it can seem quite overwhelming to decide which one to buy. When deciding which French Press in Sri Lanka you should buy, decide on these aspects beforehand. Other than making your purchase from a quality brand, you should select a coffee plunger in Sri Lanka that will make the desired amount of coffee for you. Places like Fits Retail is a good choice to start looking at. The most standard sizes are 3-cup, 8-cup and 12-cup coffee makers. As a cup is usually 4 ounces, get one that fits your needs and those in the household. When it comes to designs, they vary drastically, varying from classic stainless steel, glass, in metallic colours to ones in plastic in all sorts of various colours. Tempered glass rarely conflicts with the brewing process and looks elegant, but it can break easily. When it comes to plastic, some maintain, that it isn't good for steeping coffee, as certain molecules may seep into the mixture. But on plus side, it won't break quickly! With stainless steel, you won't have to worry about either of the two, but it won't be transparent. So, you won't see the coffee being brewed. It should ideally complement your kitchen space as well, so think about the appearance if that sort of thing is important to you.
