Golden Boy Fried Chicken: From Humble Stall to Beloved Damansara Kim Destination

A Golden Reputation Grows Crisp, Juicy, and Almost Greaseless Six Signature Sauces Burgers, Wraps, and a Reimagined Ayam Gepuk Comfort That Keeps Getting Better

Some of the best food stories begin quietly, at a single stall in a neighbourhood hawker centre, where reputation spreads not through social media stunts but through word of mouth, one delighted diner telling another. That is exactly how Golden Boy Fried Chicken began life: a modest operation tucked inside Medan Selera MBPJ in Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya, serving fried chicken so good that demand quickly outgrew its original walls. Today, it has moved just a few steps away to an air‑conditioned first‑floor venue above Farm to Plate restaurant, but the heart of what makes it special has not changed, and neither has the quality of that golden, glorious chicken.

The Chicken: Thin Crust, Juicy Meat, Pure Gold

The star attraction lives up to every compliment. What strikes you first is the crust: thin, crisp, and beautifully golden, with none of the heavy, doughy batter that weighs lesser versions down. It shatters satisfyingly with the first bite, giving way to meat that stays tender, succulent, and deeply flavoursome, all while leaving barely any greasy residue behind on your fingers or your plate. It is a careful balance that takes practice to get right: cooking long enough to crisp the skin thoroughly without drying out the meat beneath, and using the right techniques so excess oil drains away rather than being trapped in the coating. Whether you order bone‑in pieces or boneless golden tenders, every batch is made with that same exacting standard. Portions are honest and pricing refreshingly fair: two pieces start at RM13, while the largest platter, ten pieces plus one extra, comes in at RM65. Tenders range from three pieces at RM12 up to ten at RM32, with two premium sauces included in the larger sets.

Sauces Crafted In‑House, Not Poured From a Bottle

If the chicken is the foundation, the sauces are what make every visit feel new and exciting. Golden Boy makes all six from scratch, rejecting generic mass‑produced alternatives. There is a smooth, creamy white sauce that pairs beautifully with the mild sweetness of the meat; a rich, velvety nacho cheese that feels indulgent without being cloying; a bright, tangy American gold that adds zing; a balanced honey mustard that strikes the perfect middle ground between sweet and sharp; a fragrant Thai sweet sauce that brings gentle warmth; and a deep, smoky BBQ that feels like a comforting classic. You can mix and match dips for every piece in something different, turning a single plate of chicken into a tasting menu all of its own.

Burgers, Wraps, and Creative Twists

Golden Boy refuses to let great chicken stand alone. The Crispy Chicken Burger (RM12) is a masterclass in keeping things simple but done right: a soft, pillowy bun lightly brushed with garlic butter, spread with their special house sauce, stacked with a full crispy chicken chop, and finished with a slice of melting cheese. It is so satisfying that sharing is practically impossible; most regulars will tell you to order one each to avoid friendly disputes. For busy days or lighter appetites, the Crispy Chicken Wrap (RM11) takes the same excellent chicken and tucks it neatly inside a soft wrap with pan‑sealed edges, so you can eat on the go without spills or mess. It is fresh, portable, and just as delicious.

Ayam Gepuk 2.0 Refined, Balanced, Remarkable

Perhaps the most impressive innovation is their take on ayam gepuk, reworked into what they call Ayam Gepuk Version 2.0. Where many versions rely almost entirely on searing sambal heat, Golden Boy looked at every element and improved it. They swapped standard chicken pieces for a generous, juicy chicken chop easier to eat, perfectly sized alongside rice, and consistent in every order. The sambal is there, but its fieriness has been thoughtfully dialled back so you can taste the chillies, shallots, and garlic rather than just feeling the burn. The real revelation is the roasted cashew sauce: baked to deepen its richness, thickened to cling beautifully, and packed with nutty depth that complements rather than competes. The plate arrives piled with golden fried cabbage, crisp beancurd, and chewy, savoury tempeh a complete, balanced meal where every component shines, and where rice is absolutely essential to soak up every drop of sauce.

Welcoming Space, Same Great Soul

The new venue carries over much of its interior from the previous occupant, so do not come expecting sleek designer decor the real attraction is on the plate. What the space offers instead is comfort: air‑conditioned seating that makes visiting in any weather a pleasure, friendly service, and the same warm, neighbourhood feel that built the business in the first place. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 6A Jalan SS20/10, Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya, it is easy to spot from the banners outside, right above Farm to Plate restaurant.

Golden Boy’s journey is one every neighbourhood loves to see: starting small, winning hearts through quality, growing steadily, and never forgetting where it came from. The next time you crave fried chicken done right, crisp, juicy, creative, and served with genuine care, this is the place. One visit and you will understand exactly why it has earned its name.
