From Penang Legend to KL Hidden Gem: Apong Guan’s Fluffy Santan Apom Finds a New Home in Pandan Indah
After 50 years of delighting Penangites along Jalan Burma, the beloved apom food truck has passed the torch to the next generation, bringing its signature coconut-scented pancakes to the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

For over half a century, the name "Apong Guan" has been synonymous with some of the best apom (fluffy rice flour pancakes) in Penang. Founded by the charismatic Uan Cheng Guan, the food truck parked along Jalan Burma was more than just a place to grab a snack; it was a community hub. Patrons would queue patiently, not just for the fluffy, santan-scented pancakes topped with bananas and corn, but to be entertained by the 79-year-old founder’s legendary storytelling.
Now, a new chapter has begun. Uan Cheng Guan has hung up his apron, passing the family legacy to his son, Alan Uan. Drawing on his own past experience working in the capital, Alan made the bold decision to relocate the business to Kuala Lumpur, seeking a broader audience for a family recipe that remains uniquely rare in the city. Today, the iconic food truck can be found parked opposite the Hong Leong Bank branch in Pandan Indah, ready to introduce a new generation of KL foodies to a Penang classic.
Modern Consistency Meets Traditional Flavor
While the soul of the business remains unchanged, Alan has introduced a few practical updates to ensure the highest quality in his new environment. Most notably, he has swapped his father’s traditional gas fire-griddle for a modern electric griddle. This change, partly driven by local licensing requirements, has proven to be a blessing in disguise: once the electric griddle reaches its optimal temperature, it produces a pom with unparalleled consistency, ensuring every single pancake achieves that perfect, pillowy rise.

Because the griddle requires time to heat up properly, Alan prepares the pancakes in batches for takeaway orders. This method guarantees that every customer receives their apom at its absolute peak.
A Trio of Irresistible Flavors
The menu is beautifully concise, focusing on three distinct variations that highlight the delicate, spongy crumb and the sweet, aromatic fragrance of freshly squeezed coconut milk and grated coconut.
Apom Pancake Original (RM8 for 5 pieces): The timeless classic. Served hot off the griddle, these pancakes are incredibly fluffy, studded with sweet corn niblets and slices of ripe banana. While they are a delight to eat warm, allowing them to cool slightly intensifies the rich coconut fragrance and makes them much easier to handle without burning your fingers.
Apom Pancake Peanut Butter (RM9 for 5 pieces): A brilliant modern twist. This version features a generous dollop of smooth, rich peanut butter paired with coarsely chopped nuts. The earthy, savory notes of the peanut butter create a stunning textural and flavor contrast against the sweet, fluffy apom and the natural sweetness of the banana.
Apom Pancake Pandan Flavour (RM9 for 5 pieces): For the aromatic purist. The batter is infused with fresh pandan juice, giving the pancakes a beautiful, light green hue. The fragrant pandan pairs flawlessly with the grated coconut and banana, creating a harmonious, Southeast Asian flavor profile in every bite.
Bringing Penang to Your Doorstep
Since the truck’s recent arrival in Pandan Indah, it has remained a relatively quiet, hidden gem, waiting to be discovered by devoted fans and curious new customers alike. However, you don’t necessarily have to make the trip to the truck to satisfy your cravings. Understanding the demands of modern city life, Apong Guan has made their beloved apom available for delivery via major platforms, including FoodPanda, GrabFood, and ShopeeFood.
Whether you choose to visit the truck to witness the next generation of the Uan family at work or have a box of these fluffy, coconut-scented delights delivered to your door, Apong Guan proves that some traditions are worth traveling for and that the best flavors only get better with time.
