It’s always good for each and every one of us to create and cultivate good morning habits for ourselves. It’s not only important for us physically but also mentally as well. Not every morning is going to be perfect, but if we choose to set the tone of our day by avoiding these five bad habits in the morning, we will not only feel more energetic and focused, but we will also be more productive throughout our day whether it's at home or at the office cubicle.

1. Don't keep the curtains or blinds shut.

It may not feel so comfortable at first allowing the sunlight to creep in and surround your bedroom walls, but it's actually going to help you when it comes to waking up. Sunlight has many health benefits and your body actually expects it in the morning. Not only does the light itself signals your body that it is the start of the day, but the sun rays on your skin also provide a natural rise in your cortisol levels which helps provide energy and to help your brain become more awake and focused. So tomorrow when you get up in the morning, you need to open those blinds and curtains and let the sunshine in!

2. Don't drink coffee.

I know, I know. I can already feel the dislike here and don't mean to be the Debbie Downer, but before you leave this article, I would request that you allow me to at least explain myself first. If you're an avid coffee drinker in the morning, you can still drink it BUT you will want to wait a little bit before you grab your first cup of java. Why is this so important? If you drink a cup of coffee as soon as you open your eyes, you are going to feel the reaction of the coffee, not your cortisol levels and will start to feel jittery and hyper-alert. Even though those feelings seem a little good, it's only going to hurt you later on because in the afternoon, you are going to feel groggy and go through what we call the 'afternoon crash.' You won't like it, your boss won't like it and frankly it makes nobody happy. To avoid this feeling, allow your cortisol levels to rise by opening your curtains and then wait to drink your cup of coffee anywhere between 10 am to noon. Allow your body to become awake and get those cortisol levels up first. There, not so bad now, was it?

3. Don't check your social media platforms.

This is honestly a really bad thing to do. Never grab your phone when you first wake up and check out all of the latest gossip and family/friend happenings. It's not good for you mentally or physically. Anything negative that comes from this allows your body to become stressed. You don't want to allow stress to come into your mind whenever you wake up. Take some time to wake up a bit before you grab your phone and see what's happening on Instagram or Facebook. You will thank yourself for it.

4. Don't hit the snooze button.

As much as you believe that hitting the snooze button will help you get more rest, it actually doesn't and it makes matters worse. It actually makes you feel more tired when you first wake up. Why? Because if you attempt to sleep longer for a few minutes, it tends to turn your sleep cycle back on thus the tiredness and grogginess. Your brain already knows you were awake the moment you shut off the alarm the first time so continuing your sleep here is not going to help you. To avoid this, you need to shut off your alarm clock the first time and fully wake up even though you feel physically that it seems uncomfortable.

5. Don't eat a breakfast without some protein.

I know a bowl of Fruity Pebbles or a blueberry bagel looks like the perfect option to eat when starting your day but it actually does you no good to eat anything for breakfast without some protein in it to jumpstart your energy levels and satisfy your morning appetite. To get some protein in your body, you could eat some eggs and toast with some cheese sprinkled on top, or some cottage cheese spread on a slice of whole wheat bread. Or maybe a protein shake that you have prepared in your refrigerator. No matter what it is, always remember to eat foods in the morning that have some protein inside them so you can start your day on the right foot. You will feel more energetic, more focused and more productive.
