Famous indian street foods:

India is a country overflowing with culture, from its ancient architecture and monuments to its unique cuisine. Within India, street food is an integral part of the culture and can be found in every corner of the country. From biryani to samosa, each Indian street food has its own unique flavor and history.

One of the most popular street foods in India is chaat. Chaat is a savory snack made up of puffed rice, potatos, onion, and other ingredients such a tamarind chutney and spicy masala. The dish is typically served on a plate and is meant to be enjoyed while it is still hot. Although the exact origin of chaat is unknown, it has been a beloved dish in India for centuries.

Vada Pav is also a popular street food across India. It is a type of sandwich made up of a deep-fried, mashed potato-filled patty and a bun. The patty is usually coated with a flavor-packed batter made from chilli and coriander before being deep-fried. It is then served on a buttery bun, garnished with chutneys, coriander and chilli powder. Vada Pav is an immensely popular snack in Mumbai and often referred to as the city’s ‘Indian burger’.

Another must-try street food in India is the Samosa. This deep-fried, triangular-shaped snack is filled with potatoes, onions, green peas, and spices. The potato-filled samosas are usually served with chutney or tamarind dip, which makes them an even more delightful snack experience. Samosas can be found on nearly every street corner in India and in Indian restaurants all over the world.

One of the most popular of all Indian street foods is the ubiquitous pani puri. It is essentially a hollow round puri filled with spicy water, a filling such as mashed potatoes, and a sweet and sour chutney. This refreshing snack is served in almost every part of India and is loved by people of all ages. Another favorite street food of Indians is bhel puri, a crunchy combination of puffed rice, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, chutney, and spices. It is usually served in paper cones and is surprisingly filling.

Another popular street food in India is sev puri, made with a crispy crust, mashed potatoes, and onion salad. It is served with a variety of sauces and chutney, and it is truly a delight to eat. Chole Bhature is another popular Indian street food. It is a combination of spicy chickpeas and fried flatbread, and it is usually served with raw onions, pickles and chutneys.

Aloo Paratha - India's most popular street food. This dish consists of stuffed flatbread filled with potatoes and peas. It is loved by many across the country. You can easily find roadside vendors selling this meal.

Kachori - A crispy deep fried ball made from lentil flour. They are usually served with tea/coffee. No doubt they are delicious but do have some calories.

Litti - Also known as Dosa, these are thin pancake like breads that are prepared using fermented rice batter. There are different varieties and flavors, from sweet to savory. They are often eaten for breakfast with spicy chutneys but can also be consumed at any time of day.

Chana chaat is basically chickpeas combined with various ingredients, including onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and green chilies. Here, I’ve tried my hand at making vegan chaats using tofu instead.

Pav Bhaji - A deep fried savory stuffed flour & vegetable dish from India prepared using wholewheat flour or roti dough. Served with tomato based chutney & spicy pickle usually containing black mustard seeds..

Indian street food is an important part of the country’s culture and food legacy. These flavorful and deliciously prepared snacks are not only a tasty treat but also display a great sense of regional and cultural diversity. They are sure to tantalize your taste buds no matter what cuisine you prefer.
