Apong Guan: A Beloved Penang Icon Arrives in Kuala Lumpur

Half a Century of Penang Heritage A New Chapter Under Second-Generation Leadership Electric Griddles and Consistency Three Distinct Flavours From Quiet Beginnings to City-Wide Discovery Preserving Tradition While Embracing Change

For more than 50 years, the name Apong Guan has been synonymous with the soft, cloud-like texture and rich, sun-kissed fragrance of authentic Penang apom. From a humble truck parked along bustling Jalan Burma, founder Uan Cheng Guan served generations of Penangites not just pancakes but warm stories, familiar smiles, and a taste of home. Now, at age 79, he has passed the apron to his son Alan Uan, who has brought the family legacy south to Kuala Lumpur, opening a new food truck in Pandan Indah that carries half a century of heritage into a fresh chapter.

From Jalan Burma to Jalan Pandan Indah

The story began five decades ago, when Uan Cheng Guan first set up his stall along Jalan Burma. His apom made with freshly squeezed coconut milk and grated coconut became legendary: light, airy, golden-edged, and irresistibly fragrant. As customers queued, he would entertain them with stories, turning every purchase into a moment of connection. When he decided to step back, the future of the business rested with Alan, who had once worked in Kuala Lumpur and saw the capital as a place where their unique family recipe could find a wider audience. The move, first announced in June 2026, has now become reality: the Apong Guan truck is open daily, parked opposite the Hong Leong Bank branch along Jalan Pandan Indah 4/1.

Tradition Meets Modern Craft

Alan has made one key change to his father’s method, one born of both practicality and pride in consistency. Where his father cooked over a gas fire-griddle, the new truck uses a modern electric griddle, a shift required by local licensing standards but one that brings unexpected benefits. It takes longer to reach optimal temperature, which is why Alan cooks in batches, but once ready, it produces a reliably even texture and golden hue, every piece soft, spongy, and true to the family standard. He also supplies the carefully guarded batter back to operators in Penang, ensuring the original location continues serving the same authentic taste.

Three Versions, One Soul

The menu offers three distinct expressions of the classic apom:

  • Original — the timeless recipe, fragrant coconut milk batter paired with sliced bananas and sweet corn niblets (RM8 for five pieces)

  • Peanut Butter — a rich new creation, where smooth peanut butter dotted with coarsely chopped nuts sits alongside banana atop the fluffy pancake (RM9 for five pieces)

  • Pandan Flavour — naturally tinted pale green with fresh pandan juice, weaving that beloved, earthy-sweet aroma through the coconut batter (RM9 for five pieces)

Each is designed to be eaten hot, when the texture is at its lightest, or allowed to cool slightly to savour the lingering perfume of santan and pandan.

Finding Its Audience in Kuala Lumpur

For now, the truck remains something of a hidden gem quiet enough that word-of-mouth is still spreading. Alan views this as a gentle start, a chance to perfect the rhythm before the crowds find him. To reach those who cannot visit in person, Apong Guan is listed on FoodPanda, GrabFood, and ShopeeFood, bringing the taste of Penang directly to doorsteps across the city. The hours are welcoming: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, offering apom for morning breakfast, afternoon tea, and every sweet interlude in between.

A Legacy in Every Fold

What makes Apong Guan’s arrival so special is not merely the food but the continuity. A father’s recipe, honed over half a century; a son’s decision to carry it forward, respecting the past while adapting for the future; a Penang favourite now sharing its magic with Kuala Lumpur, one fluffy apom at a time. The fragrance of santan still drifts through the air, the texture still melts on the tongue, and the warmth of a family’s care remains in every piece. For Penang natives living in the capital, it is a taste of home. For everyone else, it is a discovery and a delicious one.
