A Taste of Nostalgia: Why Coffee Tiam Foo’s Cooking is Seremban’s Ultimate Grandmother-Style Comfort Food

Tucked away on the bustling Jalan Temiang, this old-town institution serves up gossamer-thin squid bee hoon, traditional flannel-filtered coffee, and an addictive fish-skin yong tau foo that tastes exactly like a cherished family recipe.

This isn’t just mum’s cooking. It’s something deeper, more rooted, and infinitely more comforting: it’s grandma’s cooking.

Picture fine, gossamer strands of thin rice vermicelli swimming in a dark, braised gravy that leans more soupy than saucy. Imagine tender chunks of pork, some lean, some beautifully fatty, punctuated by the sudden, satisfying pop of a perfectly cooked cephalopod tentacle. This is a plate of squid bee hoon as old-school as it gets, and it is the undisputed star of Coffee Tiam Foo’s Cooking, a beloved institution in the heart of Seremban’s old town.

Located along the perpetually bustling Jalan Temiang, this eatery is a testament to the enduring appeal of heritage flavors. Yes, the place is consistently packed, and yes, parking can be a notorious challenge. But for hungry patrons seeking an authentic taste of the past, neither of these minor inconveniences is enough to deter them.

The Morning Ritual: Caffeine Before Carbs
Though the shop remains open past lunchtime, the morning crowd is the most vibrant, drawn by the promise of a substantial, soul-warming breakfast. However, true aficionados know that one never starts with the noodles. Proper protocol dictates that caffeine must come first.

The coffee here is still brewed the traditional, painstaking way, utilizing long-spouted coffee pots and classic flannel filters. The result is a kopi kaw that is rich, intense, and unapologetically robust more bitter than sweet, designed to properly jolt the senses awake. We enjoyed our cups alongside the requisite orders of half-boiled eggs and butter kaya toast. The toast, joyfully retro with its slightly irregular, rectangular shape, is the perfect vehicle for dipping into the runny yolks like thick, comforting soldiers.

The Main Event: Squid Bee Hoon
Once the coffee ritual is complete, the noodles take center stage. The signature Squid Bee Hoon is a masterclass in textural contrast and deep, savory flavor. The delicate rice vermicelli absorbs the dark, heady braising liquid, while the generous chunks of pork belly melt in the mouth. The highlight, however, is the fresh, springy squid, which adds a delightful chew and a taste of the sea that elevates the entire dish. It is the kind of meal that evokes a profound longing for home-cooked Sunday lunches at a grandmother’s house.

The Noodle Spectrum and the "Ah Yee" Special
While the squid bee hoon is the crown jewel, Coffee Tiam Foo’s repertoire is vast. Regulars frequently return for their Hakka mee (a Seremban staple), pork noodles, laksa, claypot loh shu fun, and loh mee.

During our visit, the proprietor highly recommended a third, hybrid dish: the Ah Yee Loh Shu Fun. This dish features the Hakka "silver needles," a thinner, longer variant of the loh shu fun (mouse-tail noodles) commonly found in the Klang Valley. Instead of the dark, caramelized sauce typical of claypot versions, this iteration is bathed in a thick, gelatinous gravy reminiscent of loh mee, albeit clearer and more refined in color. Topped with savory minced pork, fragrant fried shallots, and delicate ribbons of Chinese-style omelette, it is a hearty, deeply satisfying bowl designed to fuel a full day of work ahead.

The Yong Tau Foo Showcase
No meal here is complete without a side of yong tau foo, another signature pillar of the menu. The display boasts over a dozen varieties, ranging from fried sui kow and bean curd puffs to bitter gourd and eggplant stuffed with a savory blend of pork and fish paste. Homemade meatballs, crispy pork skin, fried tofu, and stuffed chillies round out the impressive selection.

While every piece is fantastic, the undisputed champion is the fish skin-w fish cake. A fried variety, it offers an irresistible auditory and textural experience: the initial, deafening crunch of the crispy fish skin gives way to the tender, bouncy fish cake within. It is so dangerously addictive that ordering just one piece is practically a guarantee of failure.

A Culinary Time Capsule
For some, a single plate of noodles is simply not enough. The flavors at Coffee Tiam Foo’s Cooking are so meticulously balanced and deeply nostalgic that they transport you back in time. In an era of rapid culinary trends and fusion experiments, this eatery stands as a proud, unyielding guardian of tradition. It is a place where fresh squid, luscious pork belly, and a dark, heady gravy still reign supreme, proving that sometimes, the oldest recipes are the ones that satisfy the most.
