In recent years, there have been plenty of changes in the food-tech industry, and food tech is no longer confined to just cloud kitchens. Every stage of the value chain has now been tapped into from how food is cooked, ordered, sold, and even marketed.

With that, there have been plenty of opportunities across the spectrum of food tech, and startups have identified these needs and created a business. The great thing about food tech is that it’s not only a business opportunity but also has a social impact.

Below is a curated list of some of the top food tech startups out there that’s a testament to how far the industry has come.

Gathar, Australia

Gathar was founded on the premise of individuals who love entertaining but aren’t a fan of setting up and cooking. The company helps take the stress out by connecting individuals with chefs who’ll come by and do all the work while you mingle with your guests. Since its launch, the company has achieved much success and has grown to over 10 locations in Australia.

While the recent pandemic may have thrown a spanner in the works for plenty of businesses, Gathar was able to step out of their comfort zone and experiment and innovate while still meeting consumer needs. It seized this opportunity to create a value proposition that delivers clear benefits to its customers by catering to parties of two, and even hosting a virtual dinner party with chefs providing four-course meals to a guest’s home.

iFarm, Finland

With iFarm, they’ve developed solutions for modern urban farming by creating technologies where anyone can grow fresh vegetables, fruits, and edible flowers for either their use or for commercial purposes. These solutions are not only sustainable, but they’re also budget-friendly, eco-friendly, and suitable for all seasons.

The company was founded in 2017 but has already won the Nordic Startup Award and even raised seed funding in early 2019. The current technologies they’ve developed include vertical farms to grow strawberries and a variety of plants and a standalone module for growing greens.

Meatable, Denmark

Meatable has identified a market where there are those who love meat but aren’t fans of the industrial farm practices that are harmful to the environment and cruel to animals. To solve this issue, the company has created efficient, sustainable, and harm-free pork. To do so, the company takes a sample from an unharmed pig and replicates the natural process of fat and muscle growth with opti-ox technology.

The result? Succulent, delicious meat that’s 100% produced with a natural process. Another great thing about this method is that it only takes three weeks for the meat to be produced while it’ll usually take at least three years for a cow to develop enough to be slaughtered.

Oddbox, United Kingdom

Founded by a husband and wife duo, Oddbox is a sustainable fruit and vegetable box delivery service. The company rescues odd and surplus fruit and vegetables before delivering it to the community in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.

So far, the company has rescued over 2,000 tonnes of produce from going to waste, and by the end of 2020, the company is aiming to tackle 5% of the pre-farm gate fruit and vegetable waste in the United Kingdom and EU. While the contents within the box change frequently, you can expect to receive vegetables such as potatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, and fruits such as apples, plums, and pears.
