Red and brown
There were dragons all around our house. Red dragons. There was the red dragon that sat on a shelf. Soft and furry, with a long tail that hung over the side.

Sometimes when I visit my parents house, I walk by my mothers office and look in the doorway, finding her elsewhere, her desk chair abandoned. The empty chair hits a note, reminding me that one day this chair will be permanently empty. Knowing one day I might glimpse it and profoundly feel her absence. It’s a premature grief, acknowledging that your time with someone is limited. At the age of 69 she may continue to live for decades, but it’s still a moment that gives me pause as much as it does appreciation - that my mother is simply in another room, and the option to find her and wrap my arms around her is still available.

Words may fail to do justice to how amazing you have been to me. Often I have heard and seen when people are placed on Life support machines to take hold and bring back the life they once lived. In my case, you gave your life in the quest for my future and well-being. You were no MACHINE.

Many women inspire me in my life, but I would be amiss if I didn’t start talking about an experience my mother had when she was a teenager. For some context, my maternal grandmother was French and married my American grandfather shortly after WWII. They met during the end of the war while my grandfather was stationed there to help build airfields for the Allied planes to land on. They lived in America and had three children, the oldest being my gentle mother.

The runner’s jog past me, eyes downcast and shoulders sagging. It is the 20-mile mark, the most challenging leg of the 26.2-mile race. A cheer from the crowd perks them up, and the marathoner’s posture changes, making their feet a little lighter. I clap along with them, but my eyes scan the horde for the only person I truly care about: my mom. I see her in the distance, her powerful legs moving rhythmically as she approaches the checkpoint, her arms pumping. “GO MOM!” I shout out excitedly. My dad and brother join in, and we continue cheering in unison until she’s right in front of us. Breathing heavily, she acknowledges us with a smile and continues on, body and mind resolute. She has more than three hours of non-stop running behind her and still more than an hour left to go. As I watch her round the corner, I think to myself for the millionth time: My mom is a superhero.

My mother, all my life, she's been the one I look up to the most. I guess I'm stating out the obvious, *chuckles* but I guess that's just how I feel.
