Mainstream Media's Hypocrisy: Part Two

Why No One Listens to Moses Farrow and Soon Yi Previn?

Now let’s talk about Moses Farrow.

He told his story both through People Magazine and a blog, where he laid out everything that was done to him while living in Mia Farrow’s home, as well as laying out what happened to his other siblings. Moses Farrow is a family therapist who helps families who have adopted or have been adopted, giving him a very astute look at not just his own experiences, but why his mother might have turned out the way she did, going back through her family history which is filled with very likely abuse and neglect. Another very smart, very articulate person who laid himself out there for the world to see, without asking for pity or demanding the boycott of Mia Farrow.

The other facts Moses Farrow mentioned were the real circumstances surrounding the deaths of his siblings Lark, Tam, and Thaddeus. Facts the HBO series failed to mention, but instead focus on issues that really have nothing to do with the abuse of children, something the producers claimed the series was about.

Again, if we are in a society that says “believe all victims”, why are Moses and Soon Yi barely given a moment’s thought?

There are two possible reasons: systemic racism and the want for entertaining headlines.

Hear me out here.

The systemic racism started with Mia Farrow being allowed to adopt all of these kids without anyone checking in to make sure the children were safe and taken care of, and despite the testimony from former baby sitters who said Mia Farrow was being stretched beyond her mental capacity. If the police were going to investigate Woody Allen for possible child molestation, then there also should have been an investigation of Mia Farrow and all of the kids in her home.

All of this information was readily available to HBO, but they didn’t use any of these facts. Not the court testimony that shows the other side of this story. Instead, “Allen v Farrow” is without question the Mia, the Ronan, and the Dylan show, highlighting the white successful white kids, with outside experts and NO ONE who was directly involved with the case. Giving a series that wasn’t even close to a two sided representation of All the facts.

Why? Because no one wants to believe a meek and sensitive appearing white woman could be a serial child abuser.

Another reason for ignoring these victims, there is still a tendency to throw out the stories of immigrants, in this case, Asian immigrants. Both Moses and Soon Yi were from South Korea. Lark was from Vietnam. Tam was from Vietnam. Thaddeus came from India, making all of these kids Asian Immigrants. Lark passed away from AIDS related pneumonia, Tam and Thaddeus by suicide.

The other reason for ignoring these claims is simply because Dylan provides more entertainment value. People love to watch the suffering of others. It’s much more dramatic to see a victim who is still in pieces over their abuse, rather than being healthy. A prime example of this is the story of Samantha Geimer who was raped by director Roman Polanski when she was thirteen years old, who said she wasn’t treated well by the media. She was either seen as a whore, or thought to be too forgiving if she wasn’t crying or angry about her assault. This could very well be the case with Moses Farrow and Soon Yi Previn, they are too healthy to be entertaining for a country that loves watching other people in pain. Also, there is the simple truth that Moses Farrow and Soon Yi Previn live very private lives, which as human beings, they deserve to live their lives privately, on their own terms, something Mia Farrow never allowed them to do.
