Love to Death

A casual tale

By Heri hoerudin Published 3 days ago 3 min read

In the small town of Willowbrook, where everybody knew everyone else’s business, lived a young woman named Emma. She was the kind of person who could light up a room just by walking into it. Always cheerful and always kind, Emma had a knack for making people feel special.

Emma had a best friend named Alex. They had grown up together, their houses just a stone’s throw apart. From tree-climbing competitions to late-night talks about their dreams, they were inseparable. As they got older, it became clear to everyone around them that there was something more than friendship brewing between them. Everyone except for Emma and Alex, of course.

One summer evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky turned a beautiful shade of orange, Emma and Alex found themselves sitting on the hood of Alex’s old truck, parked by the lake. It was their favorite spot. They talked about everything and nothing, as they usually did.

“You ever think about the future?” Alex asked, skipping a rock across the still water.

“Sometimes,” Emma replied, her voice soft. “I just want to be happy, you know? Do something that makes a difference.”

Alex nodded, but he wasn’t thinking about the future in the same way. He glanced at Emma, her face bathed in the fading light, and wondered what it would be like to hold her hand, to kiss her, to tell her how he really felt. But he never found the courage. Not then.

Time passed, and life moved on. Emma went off to college, and Alex stayed in Willowbrook, working at his family’s garage. They stayed in touch, but things weren’t the same. Emma met new people, had new experiences, and Alex felt like he was being left behind.

One winter break, Emma came back home. She was different, more confident, more worldly. But to Alex, she was still the same Emma who would challenge him to a race up the big oak tree. They fell back into their old rhythm, and for a while, it was like nothing had changed.

One night, after a party, Emma and Alex found themselves back at the lake. It was cold, their breath visible in the air. They sat in the truck, talking about life and love. Alex could feel the weight of unspoken words hanging between them.

“Emma,” he started, his voice trembling. “I need to tell you something.”

Emma turned to look at him, her eyes wide and curious. “What is it, Alex?”

“I love you,” he blurted out. “I think I always have.”

There was a moment of silence, so thick it was almost unbearable. Then Emma smiled, a tear rolling down her cheek. “Oh, Alex,” she whispered. “I love you too. I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

They kissed, a sweet and gentle kiss, filled with all the years of unsaid words and unacknowledged feelings. It was perfect.

From that moment on, Emma and Alex were inseparable once again, but this time as a couple. They faced challenges, of course. Long-distance was tough when Emma returned to college, but they made it work. They wrote letters, called each other every day, and visited as often as they could.

Years went by, and they grew stronger. They built a life together, filled with love, laughter, and a few tears. They got married in the spring, under the big oak tree where they used to race. It was a small, simple ceremony, with only their closest friends and family.

Life wasn’t always easy, but they faced every obstacle together. Their love was a testament to the power of patience and the beauty of growing up together.

And as they grew old, sitting by the lake on the hood of their old truck, they knew that their love had been worth every moment. From childhood friends to lifelong partners, Emma and Alex’s love was truly something to cherish—right to the very end.

That's the story of Emma and Alex, two people who found love in the most natural way possible. Their journey was filled with ups and downs, but in the end, their love conquered all.
