About Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak. It towers over the Tanzanian lowlands at a height of 19,341 feet. Mount Kilimanjaro is also the world's tallest free-standing mountain, meaning it is not part of a mountain range (such as Mount Everest and the Himalayans).

The weather on the mountain changes greatly depending on elevation and season. It can be exceedingly chilly at the summit, therefore warm, windbreaking apparel is a necessary. Heavy rain is also possible at any time, therefore quality waterproof gear is required. All climbers should be well-equipped.

The dry season is the greatest time to climb Kilimanjaro. The ideal months to visit are January, February, July, August, September, and October. The rainy season lasts from March to April, May to June, November to December. Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year.

The six-day Machame variant is a challenging route. Particularly difficult is the combination of days four and five. The fourth day is a long hike from Barranco to Barafu. The very long and arduous summit day begins around midnight, following meals and a partial night's sleep. The six-day Machame path necessitates 19-24 hours of strenuous walking at extremely high altitude, with just 4-6 hours of sleep.

Welcome to Machame

Mount Kilimanjaro's most popular route is the Machame path. Many people prefer this path because it offers spectacular views and a diverse range of habitats. The Machame route is chosen by almost half of all climbs and most experienced climbers. Because of its ease of access and shorter itinerary, it is also one of the most affordable options.

The Machame path is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a challenging ascent, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola way. Unlike the Marangu Route, which has a gentle gradient and hut accommodations, climbers on Machame travel steeper paths for longer durations while staying in tents.

About the Machame Route

The hike begins at Machame Gate, which is located at the mountain's southern base and is only a short drive from Moshi or Arusha.

The trail begins in Kilimanjaro's beautiful, verdant montane rainforest. The lower slopes, as one might imagine, receive a lot of precipitation. Trekking poles are recommended because the terrain might be steep and slippery. The trees diminish as the trail approaches the Shira Plateau, and are replaced by low brush in the heather zone.

The path then ascends to the volcanic plug Lava Tower before falling and skirting beneath the South Icefield. The southern circuit is the circular path that connects Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu. Climbers are treated to spectacular views as they make their way halfway around the peak.

The long, difficult ascent to the peak is made from the east by countless switchbacks up progressively loose gravel until we reach the crater rim at Stella Point. Then it's another hour of pretty level terrain to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Mweka track is followed on the fast descent.
