What School Counselors and Teachers Need To Know About Black Students by Bassey By.

In my country, racism couldn’t thrive, but classism has.

I wonder which is worst — both damage human lives. Experiencing and witnessing racism in the USA was a frightening experience for me. But it isn’t destructive enough to hinder thousands of Caribbean people and me. We enter these countries with a plan wrapped up in hope. Most of us succeeded and became assets to our adopted country while adding value to our birth country.

As a teacher or counselor, take a second and imagine your child as a Black or brown student in your classroom or counseling session.

Reading this piece, I didn’t think that education had a color. In my country, it’s about the amount of money your parents have and the value they put on your education. Inside our schools, your child’s brilliance, or the lack of it, is where the competition begins, not how dark your skin color is.

African-American students can learn and master skills quickly if teachers treat them as human beings. Nothing special, but treat black students as you would treat white, orange, or pink or green students.

Why would educational professionals insert racism into education? How far will some people go to destroy a child’s life? The classroom is not a place for discrimination of anyone or any race.

African-American parents want the best for their children as other parents want for theirs.

Isn’t that what every parent wants?

Black parents are social workers, doctors, lawyers, scientists, professors, teachers, musicians, cleaning persons, journalists, hairstylists, etc.

Do our careers care about our race? Are particular professions contained to a specific race?

African American students can score As, Bs, Cs, Ds, and Fs like other students.

If the appropriate investments are made in my children’s education, will their grades be racist?

Believe black students experience as you would do with white or green students bullied because of their physical or learning differences.

Damn, this is the action of educational professionals? Is education racist? How were these teachers trained? Is racism a part of their training? Or is it a part of their thinking?

Please do not say to African American students that you are afraid of their parents. Any issue with parents, address it with their parents.

My race was born with two powerful genes. A fighter gene. And a Warrior gene. Tests and temptations are attracted to us because of our skin color. Racist Laws and cruelty force us to defend our skin color. We didn’t create the problems. We are victims of racism. So we must constantly defend ourselves in a place we shouldn’t have to.

Racism has no place inside our schools. Teaching children hatred will backfire on society. They learn to hate because of how they are treated compared to other races inside our schools.

Black parents talk about the safety of their children in the classroom, school playgrounds, and on the public roads.

Our schools should be one of the safest places on earth. And if racism is allowed to grow, it will reap and harvest hatred, violence, and death.

Check your biases at the door because you are a professional paid by taxpayers or tuitions.

Whose job is it to do this? Why should this be done when teaching children? What is racial bias doing inside a classroom?

Join the police force, fire department, or a community church if you’re uncomfortable teaching Black students.

Are teachers in some of these educational institutions where racism is allowed in, given a choice of which race to teach?

I have heard stories that black nurses are assigned to patients with similar skin color. But shouldn’t a line be drawn when educating our children? Education shouldn’t be colorized.

Is that action normal for health care?

They’re asking for your positive empathy — for their children to be alive and free in America.

Why? Why should I ask for the right for my black child to live and be free in their country of birth? Why is this even an option?

If America continues to see the black race as a threat, they will always be caught off. E.g., January 6, 2020 attack on the US capital. School shootings are out of control. You want more examples, ask Google and history.

Most people of color want to live and enjoy their gift of life. They don’t have a problem working and fighting for what they want. They only want equal everything.

Equality isn’t a privilege. It’s a right without regard to race!

Be a change you want to see in the world and be a professional. Yes, you can make an impact in the classroom and instill a positive mindset in your students.

Teachers are the most influential people in our society and life. Like mothers, they aided and abetted dreams to come true. They assist fate and destiny to have their say. They can heal, nurture, educate, inspire, motivate, etc. Some of them are second mothers or fathers to their students. Our children’s future passes through their hands. They hold the key to the failure and success of their students.

Racism has no place in schools or any learning institutions!

Thank you for reading this piece. I hope you will enjoy it.
