One thing that makes us humans is our ability to create art. Although one might argue about this creation in itself being the epitome of artistic abilities, humans still have the intelligence and emotions to work around it. We see it in our attempt to ennoble our homes with interior design. But how does it work? One thing that helps us, humans, create artistic magnificence out of nothing is the wisdom about the fundamentals of design. Interior Design stands and works on around 7 basic elements. What are these?

Color

We all have been studying since our childhood that there are primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary, and so on. Although this is something that every designer works around, there is much more to it. Color psychology roots designers’ decisions. You must know how colors help and trouble each other. The aim must be to create an interior that soothes eyes rather than pricking them.

Line

Lines could be formed by anything visual in your sight; the edge of a wardrobe can create a line; the shadows falling from sconces can make like. It could be anything. When deciding on the symmetry or design in the interior, you have to make sure that the lines are not in conflict with each other.

Light

Light can be divided into a few forms:

• Natural Light – Sunlight arriving from the open spaces

• Artificial light

o Direct light – When light falls directly upon the object

o Indirect light – When light falls indirectly after getting reflected from some object

Choose your lighting wisely. It can make or break the vista of your home. Know the color scheme of your home and buy ambiance lighting to bring harmony to the interior. Look for websites dealing in home and garden space.

Space

As an interior designer, you must try to bring a balance between positive and negative space. Positive space is the space that has furnishing and decors in it; whereas, an empty space is called negative space. But this does not conclude space.

Everything inside a home resides in space. As a designer, you must know the dimensions of things in the interior. This will help you manipulate the space if required.

Form

Form contains the general outlook of anything. For example, a plant could have a form, a fireplace could have a form, or that sculpture in the corner. Furthermore, things also have a visual mass, and this impacts the overall form.

Pattern

Pattern comes to life when things repeat themselves in a way that the mind can recognize them. For example, the flower plants in your garden can be creating a pattern that you must recognize. The pattern is as dear to interior designers as the lighting and other elements. It impacts us psychologically. Having too many patterns will make the space seem smaller.

Texture

This is how things feel when touched. The texture of things could be anywhere from coarser to silk-like. But why should it matter? A rough texture creates an illusion of reduced space. This is the reason why many people with big spaces use textured upholstery. If you have a smaller space, try using a smooth texture in the interior.

These are the basic elements of interior design. If you are planning to design your interior by yourself, try to absorb the wisdom before you start working. Use décor items to embellish your space. Look for sites like Shopify to help you in your buying process.

Your aim as a designer must be to shape your home exactly as you dream about it. And for it, you must know how these elements interact with each other.

The first element is space, which refers to the physical area and dimensions of a room. Next is line, which can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal and helps create movement and flow within a space. Shape follows, which can be geometric or organic and adds visual interest. Texture is also important, as it adds depth and tactile sensations to a room. Color is another crucial element that sets the mood and tone of a space. Light is also important, as it affects how colors are perceived and can create different moods. Finally, pattern adds visual interest and can be used in textiles or wall coverings to add depth to a space.
