But the moment you grab your pen, you hit an invisible, solid wall. You suddenly crash right into the massive, historical divide between our direct, no-nonsense mentality and the transatlantic cult of the forced permanent smile. In our part of the world, we are naturally hardwired to say things exactly as they are—matter-of-factly, raw, and straight to the point. If a class is boring, we say it’s boring. If a person is cold, we don't sit there and pretend they are our long-lost best friend. In the United States, however, the playing field is entirely different. Their culture is fundamentally programmed from birth around ultimate motivation, relentless positive reinforcement, and a desperate effort to look "happy" at all absolute costs. Anything that isn’t labeled as amazing, mind-blowing, or perfect is instantly perceived over there as a brutal, personal attack.

Five Things I Liked About Going to School
Back to school season is in full swing and I hope that everyone has a successful year. The last time I ever stepped foot inside a public school was nearly 20 years ago. I attended two different vocational schools and graduated from both of them in a span of two years. The last school I attended, I graduated with Honors. Next month will mark 15 years since I graduated from the now closed Ouachita Job Corps. I've talked about my time there in one of my previous stories, which I'll link down below. In this story, I'll share some great things I loved about going to school. Many people dread it, but there are some good parts about it.
