A Sapphic Story I wrote in 2008

The characters were part of a book I had been working on called Graceful Butterflies. Sadly, I’ve been struggling to find the old drafts as my computer crashed, but found this short story posted on Serebii.

Carol Patience sighed as her back was fixed against the purple sheets on the bed. The seventeen year old thought it was a very strange way to celebrate her birthday. Lying on her bed, semi naked whilst her girlfriend, was somewhere around the flat. Carol stood up and stared at herself at the rectangle shaped mirror on the wall. She certainly noticed that her changes from two years ago. Never would she have thought that she would have a girlfriend, around twice her age. Carol was fourteen when she first met Grace Butterfly, after being bit by a snake and found her self out of planet earth.

The Japanese woman, had converted her from the terrified, paranoid and dependent girl, into a confident young woman with a sense of independence. Grace instructed her to get revenge on those who deliberately tried to cause her harm and grief. Carol was not really pleased when Grace told her to murder her abusive father, so Grace did it for her. The raven haired woman gave a strong promise to make her strong, and she certainly did, made her stronger than she ever felt before. Of course, nothing was ever going to be perfect, but things were much better and have defiantly improved.

She was mainly bullied at school because she wasn't very bright and was the younger sister of Kate. Kate was pretty abusive from her father's side, and everybody thought, that Carol was going to be exactly the same, so she was beaten up and bullied and was frightened off, just to make sure. Although Carol could never have gotten over the fact that she was responsible for the death of her so called friends, they were some very good times that they had shared, for example the time where they all went to the concert together to watch Mcfly live; they were really brilliant and Dougie was pretty sexy.

Grace's uncle, Simak was truly right. Planet Butterfly was not a perfect world, but a rather peaceful one instead and sometimes it was pretty dull and boring. When Carol asked Grace if she wanted to live in Earth instead, she quickly agreed, although they did need to give Simak a little more persuasion until he granted Grace permission to come and go wherever she pleased. Simak was obviously very disappointed with his niece when he found out that they had sex on her fifteenth birthday. He referred to Grace as a disgrace to the family and a very manipulating woman.

Carol understood both sides though, although Simak was fond of lesbian romance, he despised child abuse with a passion and had very strong views about certain things. For example, Simak believes that sex should only happen to those who are truly in love, and are not just simply lusting for each other. Grace admitted that she fell in love with Carol the night they had made love, but that wasn't enough to convince her strict uncle. Pretty understandable in Carol's mind since he is after all the emperor of Planet Butterfly and wants to keep his family name clean.

She was pretty shocked herself when Grace told her that she had loved her. Carol was curious about girls since her fourteenth birthday and decided that she wouldn't mind being a lesbian herself. She had a pretty bad experience with boys, which did help convert her into liking girls and she never really found a guy that made her just go wow! She either didn't like their looks, or didn't like their personality, the same applied for some girls as well. When she first met eyes on Grace, she thought wow, this was one pretty girl and her personality was great as well.

She quickly grew a little school crush on Grace, which eventually grew into something much more as she felt that Grace was the person who she was most close to since her sister's death. Grace was the reason why she saw the truth and Grace was the reason why she became stronger. The moment Grace had confessed her love, she was excited and delighted and followed what she said even more. They both got through tough things together, and it was all thanks to their love that they had shared.

Carol remembered the first kiss they shared, in order to get the butterfly wings, like Grace and all the other people in Planet Butterfly got, she had to lustfully kiss another person. Who did she turn to for that kiss,? She turned to Grace and Carol genuinely enjoyed that kiss. That kiss was to be the seed to her confidence and with this vivid woman, she continued her path of vengeance.

Here she was, in a flat in Tokyo. Whilst her Japanese was anything but flawless, and half the time she had to rely on Grace to translate things for her, and to write things out for her, she liked Japan a lot. She liked how everything was lit up and how every part of Japan was different. The food was very nice and Carol found that they were quite exquisite as well. Very different compared to the bland fish and chips she used to have in England. Rather less salty compared to the take away food she used to have all the time. Everything about Japan was refreshing because the culture was so different and manners were essential.

Carol quickly stood up, the minute she heard the front door swing open and the voice of Grace coming through. The brunette scurried over to her older girlfriend and spotted that she was wearing something. Grace's new apple green dress with tiny pink polka dots was quite stylish and quirky. “I like your dress,” Carol stated as she reached out to hug Grace. “It looks really nice.”

“Thanks Carol,” said Grace as she silently smirked at the funky purple underwear that instantly caught her eye as she noticed that Carol had gotten quite curvy over the years. She finally had some hips and meat on her, she looked pretty different to the skinny girl she used to be. In Grace's honest opinion, she looked much more healthier.

“At least you still have your slim figure,” Carol pointed out. “Look at me, I've piled the pounds on. I'm pretty fat now. Look at my horrible double chin. I've been eating too much sushi!”

“It looks good on you!” Grace replied as her pale hands crawled onto Carol's curves. “Your breasts have gone bigger and you have some meat on you for once, I like it.”

“Thanks,” Carol replied as she leaned against Grace's chest. One thing Carol did notice that after they finished their revenge, that Grace had truly showed her naughty side. Carol understood this all well since Grace was the one working and Carol was still in education, after their long days of work, it was nice to really cool down and chat about things that had occurred at school. Carol had also made a lot of new friends at her new school and she felt like she was truly welcome to Japan. Although she did miss the traditional British food and the good television shows, she was happy that she was able to catch up on them using the internet. “One thing, that I do wish for,” Carol stated as Grace started kissing her shoulder. “I do wish that Kate never died.”

“I wish that too,” Grace nodded as her index finger vividly danced around her body. “Think about it though, can you imagine us ever falling in love if Kate hadn't of died?”

This was a very hard question for Grace to explain. Before proper interaction with Grace, Carol was always dependent on Kate and was always her savior for everything. It wasn't long before she knew that Grace used to feel that way about Kate as well. It was very obvious that Grace loved Kate, otherwise she would never refer to her as her angel. Carol thought, if Kate was still alive today, she and Grace would have been very good friends, but not a couple. Maybe they did have a relationship before and the flame died out, Carol had no idea, nor wouldn't dare to ask either incase it was a disgrace to Kate's memory. “I think we would have been very god friends,” Carol admitted truthfully, “but I think you would have been with Kate.”

“Well, who knows,” Grace asked herself as she dragged Carol to the sofa. “You saw her soul in Planet Butterfly. She'll be looking over us and she said that she's really happy for us.”

That was the main reason why Carol wanted to seek revenge. In order to gain all the privileges in Planet Butterfly. Seeing Kate's spirit was the ultimate motivation for that. That was one thing that Grace and Carol had in common; they both adored Kate and will always remember her forever.

“Things have changed so much,” Carol pointed out as she rested on Grace, like she always did in the past. “I seem like I am living a refreshed life. I feel very happy, but the only problem I seem to have is that I wonder, if this is going to last. Romances at my age, are lucky if they even last a year. These are the best two years of my life, don;t get me wrong and I love you to bits, but I just don't want this to end. We are coping well, but what if things go wrong? What if our sins catch up with us? What if we get arrested for the murders we caused, and we get separated for life?”

“You worry too much,” Grace replied as her hand touched Carol's cheek. “What's done is done, whatever happened in the past stays in the past. You've had your revenge, so forget about those bullies and move on. Like how I moved on with Elizabeth.”

Carol nodded as her drops of water formed in her eyes. “I do think, I was unfair to Elizabeth.” she confessed. “I mean, when I spoke to her alone, she sounded like a very nice person. It would have been nice to have still kept contact with her. You, Kate and her used to be the best of friends and you seemed unbreakable, just a shame that your friendship has come to such a bitter end.”

“Happy endings doesn't happen for everyone.” grace reluctantly said as she lied down on the brown leather sofa with Carol's weight on top of her. “I thought I taught you that!”

“You have,” Grace said. “But surely you two could make peace, for the sake of the good times you shared and put the bad times behind you.”

“I'll think about it!” Grace said as she patted Carol's back.

The two women rested on each other as the room was filled with silence. This was Grace's day off work, and Carol wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. Carol had just had a thought, what if her and Grace were legally married? Would it be any better or worse? Off course, Carol knew the vows clearly: For better or for worse. For richer of for poorer. To have and to hold. To love and to cherish, till death do us part. Carol knew that she would really like it, but wasn't sure about Grace. Marriages always seemed to be beautiful and meaningful.

“Grace......” Carol murmured her girlfriend's name as she yawned.

“Yes Carol.”

“I was just wondering.......”

“Wondering what?”

“I mean we love each other, and I'm totally crazy for you. Do you think we can take it the next step?”

“Carol,” Grace giggled. “We've already gone all the way when I claimed your virginity.”

“I didn't mean that,” Carol shook her head as she held onto Grace's hand playfully. “I was wondering, if you would ever marry me?”

“You just took the words out of my mouth!” Grace said as she gently spanked Carol. “I was about to ask you that later. ”

“But would you though?”

“Of course I would!” Grace exclaimed as planted a kiss on Carol's cheek. “Although, it would make more sense if I proposed to you.”

“Why?” Carol asked.

“Well, it is your birthday. So it would be better if I asked you.” Grace gently pushed Carol away from her whilst she grabbed her shopping bag and pulled out a small bright pink box. She opened the small box and reviled a silver ring with a green peridot to match Carol's sweet eyes. “Love of my life, Carol Libby Patience, will you marry me?”

“Yes.” Carol replied without no second thought. “Of course I will. ” She shouted in happiness as she tightly embraced Grace in a hug and kissed her fiancée with sheer delight. Grace slipped the engagement ring on her finger whilst allowing Carol to kiss her in pure happiness. Grace Butterfly was also delighted too, that she had changed the girl and she made Carol strong, just as Grace said she would do. However it was still kinda weird that they both proposed one after another and they both said yes, but it didn't matter to them because they were engaged.

“What kind of wedding do you want though?” Grace asked curiously. “It can't be in a church, but it can be anywhere else you want it to be.”

“I have no idea yet.” Carol replied.

“We have plenty of time to think about it!” Grace told her, “We should wait for a year at least.”

“OK.” Carol admitted whilst she admired the wonderful ring, Grace had bought her.

“We're going somewhere tonight too,” Grace pointed out as she played with Carol's brown hair. “I'm not telling you either because it's a surprise.”

“You're always full of surprises,” Carol giggled endlessly. “Why can't you just tell me?”

“It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you.” Grace smirked. “You'll have to get dressed in a minute because the taxi will be coming very soon. I got you a new dress as well, it's in the bag.”

Carol found herself fortunate that she had put her make up on early as she went into the bag and pulled out a very elegant gold dress with maroon stripes and mauve hearts in the stripes. A blue rose was resting in the middle of the dress were the chest would be. Carol tried to get it on as quickly as possible. “This dress is very beautiful.” Carol said although she wasn't too keen the shade of gold, but nevertheless, she appreciated the gift and liked the blue flower. “Thanks.”

“Don't forget your shoes as well.” Grace pointed out as she passed Carol a set of bronze high heels, that were as shiny as fresh metal. “I got you a necklace too.”

“You love spoiling me.” Carol chuckled as she slipped on the high heels in a very happy manner.

Grace had a silver necklace in her hand. She looked down at it and smiled as she stepped over behind Grace and slipped the necklace on. Carol turned round to face Grace and the Japanese woman smiled at her English girlfriend as she thought that she looked stunning. The necklace around Carol's neck had a locket shaped as a butterfly. Carol felt like she could almost cry as she saw the diamonds sparkling on the wings of the locket. She opened the door to her locket and she found a picture of Grace and Kate inside. Carol smiled in glee as she saw it. A picture of two of the most special people in her life, was wonderful. She got a feeling the rest of today was going to be an even greater day and the best birthday ever.
