Anissa Weier and Payton Leutner, two friends who were both 12, followed Morgan Geyser into the Waukesha, Wisconsin woods on a spring day in 2014. Then, as Weier and Geyser were playing hide-and-seek, they unexpectedly attacked Leutner. Geyser stabbed her 19 times while Weier watched.

They chose to murder Leutner, as the so-called "Slenderman Girls" subsequently claimed, in order to fulfill their fascination with the online legend Slender Man. Despite the fact that they gave differing accounts of who had the intention to kill Leutner (who survived), police believed Geyser to be the attack's planner.

Why did Morgan Geyser chose to murder her own friend?

How Morgan Geyser Made Her Murderous Plans

Morgan Geyser, who was born on May 16, 2002, had a lack of compassion from an early age. Her family were taken aback by her reaction when she watched the movie Bambi for the first time, according to USA Today.

Geyser's mother recounted, "We were really frightened to watch it with her because we believed she was going to be so distraught when the mother died. "But the mother passed away, and Morgan just commanded Bambi to flee. “Escape the area. Protect yourself.” She didn't seem upset about it.

Even so, Geyser didn't really seem like she had any violent fantasies in the future. When they first met in the fourth grade, Payton Leutner was drawn to her because she was quiet and artistic. Payton would later become her victim.

Leutner told of seeing her would-be killer, "She was sitting all by herself and I didn't think anyone should have to sit by themselves," to 20/20.

The two girls clicked right away. Later, Geyser told authorities that Leutner was "my only friend for a long time." And Geyser was Leutner's greatest friend, recalling her in a 20/20 interview, saying: "She was witty... She was full of jokes to share... She was an excellent artist, and she had a tremendous imagination.

However, Leutner said that when Morgan Geyser grew close to a classmate by the name of Anissa Weier in the sixth grade, things started to "go downhill." Geyser and Weier became fixated on Slender Man, a made-up character with a featureless face and tentacles who had gained notoriety as the subject of creepypasta stories and internet memes. Leutner wasn't as enthusiastic as they were.

Leutner said to 20/20, "I told Geyser that it terrified me and that I didn't like it. However, she felt it was genuine and really enjoyed it.

Weier was also unpopular with Leutner, who thought of her as vindictive and envious. Leutner debated breaking up with Geyser, but ultimately opted to stay. Everyone merits friendship, she reasoned.

Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser had started to plan her assassination in the meanwhile. They had a deeper Slender Man fixation than anyone realized.

Payton Leutner's Attempted Murder

While Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier planned Payton Leutner's murder for months, she was unaware of their plans. Weier later admitted to police that they "whispered" about the murder in public and used code terms like "cracker" to refer to the use of a knife and "itch" to refer to the actual killing.

Slender Man played a role in their motivation. They believed that if they killed Leutner to "appease" him, he would let them to reside at his home, which Geyser claimed was situated in the Nicolet National Forest. The girls claimed Leutner would kill their family if they didn't kill him.

So, on May 30, 2014, Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser made the decision to carry out their plan. They planned Leutner's murder while Geyser's 12th birthday slumber party was supposed to be a harmless, enjoyable event.

Geyser and Weier had several plans for how to murder Leutner, as they eventually admitted to the police. According to ABC News, they considered duct-taping her mouth and stabbing her in the neck throughout the night, but they decided against it since they were too worn out from a day of roller-skating. They decided to murder her in a neighboring park restroom so that her blood might pour into the toilet the following morning.

Weier attempted to knock Leutner out by hitting her head against the concrete wall of the park restroom. She then admitted to authorities that it is simpler to kill someone while they are asleep or unconscious and that it is also simpler if you do not see them in the eyes. “I think I hit her head against the concrete just a little bit.”

“Anissa attempted to knock Bella (Geyser's nickname for Leutner) out”, Geyser recalled during her interrogation. I was pacing around while Bella became enraged.

Geyser and Weier instead made the decision to murder Leutner in the woods. Leutner accompanied them into the woods, thinking it was just a game of hide-and-seek, and she accepted Weier's orders to lie down and cover herself with leaves.

Morgan Geyser explained to the police that "We led her there and tricked her." "It was kind of sad," she said. "People who trust you become very gullible."

Geyser stated: "I previously told you what happened when the police inquired what happened next... Stabbing repeatedly is necessary. She said, "It was strange. I have no regrets. I figured I'd... Actually, I had no feelings.

Geyser stabbed her companion 19 times, going through her arms, legs, and body as Weier watched. She nearly stabbed Leutner in the heart while striking two vital organs, the liver and the stomach.

As reported by Morgan Geyser to the police, "the last thing she said to me was, 'I trusted you. "After she said, "I hate you,' we told her a lie. She would go get assistance”, Anissa promised. Unsurprisingly, though, it didn't.

Payton Leutner was left bleeding in the bushes by Geyser and Weier in contrast. After successfully completing their ghastly task and packing a rucksack full of supplies, they were resolved to track down Slender Man and work as his "proxies."

Where is Morgan Geyser Now?

Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser set off on their journey after the alleged Slender Man stabbing. They abandoned Payton Leutner to perish in the woods, but she was able to make her way out and ask a passing biker for assistance.

Doctors at the hospital helped Leutner survive. According to her interview with 20/20, "I remember the first thing that I thought after I woke up was like, 'Did they get them?'" Are they present? Are they being held? Do they remain out?”

In actuality, Geyser and Weier were already in police custody. While Leutner was still recovering from surgery, they caught up to the girls close to the I-94 expressway. Both girls immediately confessed to their crimes after being taken to the police station.

“Is she dead? I was simply wondering," Morgan Geyser added, giving the impression to the police that she didn't really care whether Leutner survived the incident or not. "I'd better just say it. We were attempting to murder her.”

Geyser stated that Weier had suggested that they kill her in order to appease Slender Man, but Weier asserted that it was Geyser's idea. In her account, Geyser is quoted as saying, "We have to kill Bella."

Police eventually started to believe that Morgan Geyser was the attack's planner. "There was a lot of deception in Morgan's interview," detective Tom Casey told ABC. He was backed up by Detective Michelle Trussoni, who said that the two girls had a "clear sense of who the ringleader — who was driving this — was." Morgan was unquestionably there.

Police discovered dolls that had been mutilated and sketches of Slender Man in Morgan Geyser's bedroom. On her computer, they also discovered searches like "how to get away with murder" and "what kind of insane am [I]?"

The "Slenderman Girls" were both detained and accused with attempting to kill someone in the first degree.

Weier eventually entered a guilty plea to a lower crime and was cleared of all charges due to a mental illness or defect. She was given a 25-year prison term to be served in a mental hospital, but she was freed in 2021. Weier was given a conditional release, which included living with her father, getting mental health care, consenting to GPS tracking, and having restricted internet access.

But the way Geyser was sentenced was a little different. Despite having admitted guilt to the initial charge, she was also found not guilty due to a mental illness or defect. However, Geyser was given a 40-year prison term at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Wisconsin, close to Oshkosh. She is still there as of right now, and it is anticipated that she will stay for some time.

The judge reportedly responded, "It's a long time," as reported by The New York Times. But community safety is at stake here.

Geyser was diagnosed with early-onset schizophrenia when she was detained (her father also had schizophrenia), and in the months before her trial, she persisted in hearing voices. According to reports, Geyser also asserted that she could psychic connect with imaginary beings like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Harry Potter.

Geyser expressed regret for her actions during her sentencing. She reportedly said, "I just want to let Bella and her family know I'm sorry," as reported by The New York Times. "I never intended for this to occur. Additionally, I wish her well.”

It's going great for Payton Leutner. She expressed thanks and optimism in a public interview with 20/20 in 2019 and talked about her intentions to start college. On the other side, Morgan Geyser is probably going to be hospitalized for the next few years. Hopefully she can obtain the support she requires.
