Jennie Bunsom shocked Denver residents in 2018 when she smothered her 7-year-old nephew to death. Just 16-years-old at the time of the incident, Jennie became upset at her nephew after he asked her to play video games with him. In 2021, nearly three years after the murder, Bunsom learned her fate: she is guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with a corpse and will spend the next seven years locked up at a juvenile facility after her conviction in an adult court.

The judge in the case also imposed a 30-year suspended prison term for Bunsom. Should Bunsom find herself on the other side of the law for any reason after her release, she’ll return to prison to serve the 30-year sentence.

The Disappearance of Jordan Vong

Jordan Vong went missing on August 6, 2018. Police described Bunsome, who was babysitting him at the time, “uncooperative and hateful” during the investigation of the 7-year-old’s disappearance. Bunsom seemingly enjoyed the condolences and sympathy from her friends, playing the role of grieving aunt down to a tee.

Police felt the teen knew more than she told. And so, they filed for a search warrant for the home in order to efficiently search the cluttered crawl space and other areas of the home.

As police expected, Brunsom knew where her nephew was the entire time. In fact, she was responsible for his disappearance. On August 8, 2018, authorities executed the search warrant on the home and found Vong’s body hidden inside her closet. According to the police report, the child had "a towel and comforter wrapped around his head, biological matter and blood about his nose, and an unknown imprint on his chest.”

Police took Bunsom to the police station for an interrogation. Her mother sat with her during the interrogation. Although she initially denied hurting Vong, she finally admitted she smothered him to death. Subsequently, police took Bunsom into custody.

During her trial, Bunsom revealed she smothered her nephew by holding her hand over his mouth and nose for at least five minutes when he became upset when she would not play video games with him. She had just argued with her girlfriend, which had upset her. When Vong laid down on her bed rather than go back downstairs as instructed, Bunsom took her anger out on her nephew.

Experts Testify in Bunsom’s Defense

Several witnesses testified in Bunsom’s defense, including psychologist Martin Beyer who described the teen as “emotionally delayed” due to a childhood filled with drugs, sexual absue, and physical abuse.

Another expert testified she thought Bunsom was an excellent candidate for rehabilitation. Bunsom herself took the stand to express her remorse for the murder.

“Every day is a reminder of what I did,” Bunsom tearfully told the court. “There still has to be justice for Jordan, he was just a child. I took an innocent life. I have to pay for my sins.”

Bunsom has been incarcerated since her 2018 arrest. She is now 18 years old. Delays in the trial came as health experts conducted mental health examinations on the teen and again during the COVID-19 pandemic.
