In December 2009, a nine-month-pregnant Teka Adams lived at a Washington, D.C. homeless shelter when she met a woman who called herself Stephanie, although the woman was really named Veronica Deramous. Claiming to be a social worker who helped low-income women in her situation, Deramous promised her baby clothes and supplies for the baby. All Adams needed to do was pick the items up from her home.

Adams needed the clothing and supplies. She was ecstatic to get the help and to find someone who really seemed to care about her and her unborn child’s well-being. The 29-year-old woman drove to Deramous’s Suitland, Maryland home on

A Vicious Attack

Teka Adams

The two women conversed over lunch. Then, out of nowhere, Deramous suddenly attacked Adams, repeatedly striking her over the head with an iron fire poker. In total, Deramous hit Adams with the fire poker over 40 times. As Adams lie on the kitchen floor, Deramous tied and gagged the woman.

Deramous then explained to Adams she was there to take her baby.

Deramous tortured Adams by slowly cutting open her abdomen in an attempt to remove the fetus. Deramous used several knives and a box cutter in her makeshift cesarean section. Adams was forced to remain in this condition for the next four days.

Adams said the excruciating pain left her cursing and shaking uncontrollably. She eventually went into shock and could no longer feel the pain. Adams was awake during the entire ordeal.

Woman Gives Up

Deramous could not find the baby and finally gave up. She then became concerned when she realized it was time for her teenage son to come home from school, afraid he’d see the badly injured woman and all the blood in the floor.

Deramous cleaned the walls and floors as Adams continued lying on the floor. She then ordered Adams to move to another room but she was too weak. Deramous picked up the woman and placed her in a bedroom on a mattress.

Adams Escapes the Home

Adams cannot remember a lot of details past this point, though she remembers finally escaping the home with her organs hanging out and exposed. When she made it to the bottom of the stairs, Deramous attempted to drag her back inside the home. Fortunately, a neighbor heard her screams for help and came to help. Deramous told the man she was there to help Adams but Teka insisted the woman was trying to kill her. She lifted her shirt; the man screams and immediately runs to his apartment to notify the police.

A Baby is Born

She was transported to a local hospital where she delivered a healthy, beautiful baby girl via an emergency c-section. Miracle Sky weighed 8 lbs., 2-ounces. Adams woke up to the news of her daughter’s birth.

During the attack, Adams sustained severe injuries including a severely cut bladder and slashed abdominal muscles.

Arrest; Case Aftermath

Deramous was arrested after she surrendered to police. She pleaded guilty to first-degree assault exactly one year after the fact. She was given a 25-year sentence.

In court, she claimed Adams agreed to sell the baby girl for $5,000. This statement enraged Adams who lunged at her before security escorted her out of the courtroom.

“I tried to attack her ass in the courtroom,” a half-smiling Adams later said on House of Horrors: Kidnapped. “I jumped over the wall, and I went straight for her.”

Deramous is eligible for parole this year.

Teka overcome homelessness and now has a home with the kids and her boyfriend. Teka Adams says that she is stronger because of everything she has been through in her life.
