When people think about Criminology, they think of TV shows and serial killers. When in reality; there is so much more that goes into it, and hopefully give some people a new perspective into the life of Criminology.

What is Criminology

• Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals.

- From this you have homicide detectives.

-As well as BAU (behavioral Analysis Unit.)

It examines the principles of sociology in people; including psychology, economics, statistics and anthropology. Criminology is the study of diving into characteristics of people who commit crimes, and why.

Homicide Detectives

• Are known as “murder police”

-Their job is to determined how someone died/

-They are responsible for collecting facts and evidence pertaining to the criminal case, while determining who else may have been involved.

-Gathering a list of possible suspects, as well as conducting interviews to gather intelligence information.

BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit)

• Known as “Profilers”

-In the case of murder, homicide, or manslaughter. These guys are the ones to get involved.

-Once they have analyzed the phycological and behavioral characteristics of their suspect. They can deliver that profile to the detectives who can proceed to apprehend suspects that match the profile given.

Now let’s dig into the Phycology side to Criminology. That is more where we dive into the mental and emotion reasons behind the crimes.

Here is where we look at:

Narcissism

Sociopathy

Psychopathy

Narcissism

• Narcissist are people who have an overwhelming interest and admiration with themselves.

-This behavior is the most common in people, meaning that it is very normalized. However, that also means that people may not think it is a big deal.

Narcissist care a lot about themselves, meaning they also feel the need to constantly be the center of attention, or always been involved. When Narcissist feel as though they are losing control or notability this is when they can take violent or manic action.

Sociopathy

• Sociopathy is someone who has a personality disorder, and to substitute it they manifest themselves with modified behaviors and attitudes with a lack of conscience.

Antisocial Personality disorder is different for everyone; therefore, it is more self-diagnosed then anything. Having APD also can mean that you have a complete and utter disregard for other people’s emotions. They mimic others’ emotions and behaviors to get liked more, it is very common for Narcissist to develop Sociopathy. Signs of sociopathy; tends to lie, beak the law, lack of regard for their own safety or the safety of others.

Psychopathy

• Psychopaths are people who suffer from chronic mental illness and involves violent and manipulative behavior.

o The word ‘Psychopath’ is a word many are familiar with, as that is the word people use when they want to call someone crazy or different. Psychopaths are unstable and have aggressive tendencies, all Serial Killers are either Psychopaths or Sociopaths.

Now what is the difference between Sociopaths and Psychopaths?

Psychopaths are charismatic and very social; they have no problem fitting into society. Psychopaths are more manipulative, with a minimal risk of criminal activity. Sociopaths have a hard time being charismatic with not many social skills, They focus more on being more prone to rage and erratic/manic behavior.

One similarity about Psychopaths and Sociopaths, they are both creatures of observation. They both need to asset their surroundings, that way they can act accordingly. Now; anyone can be dangerous, but it is true that you have a better chance of violence is you are a Narcissist, Psychopath, or Sociopath.
