Bundle of Joy!

Sometimes our biggest wish is our biggest distraction.

"Babe, I can't even count how many times we've tried to conceive. I'm over it. I just want to be done trying. I don't want to try anymore." Xavier's wife Rylee sadly expressed. As she sat on the toilet and looked at the negative pregnancy test she contemplated on how she felt like a failure for not being able to give her husband what he desperately wanted more than anything...a child. Standing six foot four with a chiseled, muscular frame and skin as chocolate as a Hershey bar, Xavier kneeled down to his wife and looked her right in the eyes.

"This is your body. I will always be okay with any decision you make for the sake of your body and mental health. Yeah, I want children, WE want children, but this obstacle will never stop me from loving you. I promise. We can always adopt." He said with the most understanding tone any man could reply to his wife in. Rylee couldn't do anything but reward her husband with the most sincere kiss to show he truly meant the world to her. Xavier picked Rylee up off the bathroom floor gently and took her back to their bedroom where another round of baby-making proceeded.

See Rylee fell in love with Xavier when she was only 17 and he was 20. They met in college but not in your average college sweethearts kind of way. Because of her mothers outlandish behavior and frequently making news headlines for her drug abuse, the college decided she was ruining their reputation and insisted she withdrew immediately. The same day she was packing up her dorm room is the day she met Xavier for the first time. He never judged her or her past though. They stayed friends for a year, then began dating and finally on to marriage within five years. Xavier always thought she was the cutest little woman he'd ever seen. Rylee stood only five feet tall with a poofy curly afro and skin as smooth and as chocolate as Xavier's. They epitomized black love.

FOUR DAYS LATER

"What time will you be home honey-bunny?" Rylee prissily asked Xavier.

"About six-ish. Lots of meetings today and I know Tom's ass is going to talk everyone's ears off about all this social distancing stuff." Xavier complained.

"What's on your schedule?"

"Well, just heading to my OB for my yearly papsmear and that's about it. I'm thinking pizza, wings and wine tonight? Oh and I want to watch that new movie The Wrong Missy on Netflix." Rylee went on.

"Sounds good babe. I'll see you later." Xavier rushed as he fixed his tie and gave Rylee a quick kiss on the lips.

1PM - DOCTOR'S OFFICE

Rylee sat on the cold examination table with her exam gown on waiting for Dr. Wolpert. He was usually late so she decided to get up and mingle through the office drawers. She stuck a few cotton swabs, alcohol pads, medium gloves, Band-Aids and some gauze in her purse. "Thank goodness I wore my Burkin and not my fanny pack." Rylee joked out loud to herself. Three quick knocks on the door and Rylee rushed to jump back on the exam table. She sat there unphased and breathing normal as if she didn't just try to avoid being caught. Dr. Wolpert finally walked in.

"Good afternoon Mrs. Karlen. To what do I owe the pleasure?" The doc asked as he skimmed through Rylee's file. "Ahhh. Papsmear. The appointment every woman loves, right?" He joked.

"Oh yeah. We love them! Can't believe we can only do it once a year." Rylee joked back.

"Andddddd. How are you and Xavier. Still trying to conceive? I did notice your urine sample was still negative for Hcg." Dr. Wolpert stated with a caring tone. "If you'd like I can take a brief look at your uterus, it's called a hysteroscopy, and see if we can see anything immediate or on the surface as to why you haven't been able to get pregnant." Dr. Wolpert offered.

"You can do that today?" Rylee asked anxiously.

"I can. We've had a lot of patients cancel today so you got lucky." The doc confirmed. You'll just be under local anesthesia and it'll only take about 30 minutes for the examination.

"Wow. Yes, sure! That would give me so much relief if we could just know even one thing that's contributing to my infertility." Rylee stated excitedly.

She was then sedated with local anesthesia as Dr. Wolpert continued with the exam of her uterus followed by her papsmear. About 45 minutes went by, the anesthesia had worn off and Rylee was back to her normal self.

"How'd it go?" She asked.

"Everything went well. I did see a few things but we're going to send some samples we took from your uterus to the lab before I express any concern. We should know something in a week or two, alright?" Dr. Wolpert reassured.

Later that day, the plans for pizza, wings and wine went just as planned. Rylee and Xavier enjoyed the night in as usual and almost pee'd on themselves laughing at The Wrong Missy. They then opted for a round of tic-tac toe to choose what they would do next. A competitive Mrs. Rylee won and chose a round of Truth or Dare that included a few, well...too many, shots of Tequila and a long night in the bedroom.

9 MONTHS LATER

"Ok ma'am, I need you to breathe! Just take slow, deep breathes ok?" one of the labor and delivery nurses in the room with Rylee and Xavier explained.

"Baby, c'mon. You got this! This is moment the we've been waiting on our entire lives together." Xavier whispered in Rylee's ear as she squeezed the life out of his hand.

"AHHHHHHHHH!" Rylee shouted right before she told Xavier to shut up! "You're not pushing a human out of your vagina!" She yelled!

"Alright! We see the head!" Dr. Wolpert confirmed. About two more pushes and your baby boy will be out. On the count of three give us a big push. One. Two. Three.

"Goddd help me...ahhhhhhh!" Rylee yelled again as she did her final exhausting push. As their beautiful baby boy entered the world, what was once a noise filled labor room suddenly turned uncomfortably quiet. Xavier's face was stricken with confusion. Even though their newborn baby clearly had a healthy pair of lungs, there was one thing wrong. Rylee opened her arms to receive their new bundle of joy and even she began to cry at the sight of him. While Rylee's eyes were fixated on the baby, Xavier, with as much confusion and uncertainty as anyone could have, stiffly walked out of the delivery room and plopped into a chair in the hallway. His eyes seemed to not have blinked since he got the first glimpse of their new bundle of joy.

The nurses proceeded to push on Rylee's stomach to get any clots out and clean up the room. They congratulated Rylee on the new baby and the best response Rylee could give was a small head nod of thanks and a Mona Lisa smile. Xavier returned to the delivery room and slowly sat down.

"I'm feeling a lot of things right now so I can't promise you compassion or understanding. Now, I'm gonna' ask you one time, did you cheat on me?" Xavier stated with tear-filled eyes.

Rylee sat up, almost forgetting she had a baby in her arms. She laid the baby in the hospital bed and stood up. Blood trickled down her leg as she kneeled in front of Xavier. Instead of looking in his eyes, she looked into his soul.

"I don't know what's going on. I promise you I don't Xavier. But I have NEVER, will never, in no amount of time, cheat of you. I have been..." Rylee stopped as Xavier pushed her away and stood up.

"Then how do you explain two people with no European roots who are, how should I say it, black as fuck, giving birth to a green eyed, damn near blonde headed baby Ry? You tell me! You tell me how you explain that!" Xavier roared.

Rylee had never seen this side of her husband and it broke her heart. A heart that Xavier had never broken before was suddenly exploding into tiny pieces.

ONE YEAR LATER

"All rise." The court announcer stated as the jury handed the bailiff the verdict paper that the bailiff then handed to the judge.

Six ladies hesitantly stood. And when they did, one by one, from left to right, they began to hold hands.

"In the State of Georgia vs. Doctor Bryan Carter Wolpert case 234176-04 verdict, we the jury find the defendant Bryan Wolpert on the 1st count of unlawful insemination, guilty. Count 2 of unlawful insemination, guilty. Count 3 of unlawful insemination, guilty. Count 4 of unlawful insemination, guilty. Count 5 of unlawful insemination, guilty. Count 6 of unlawful insemination, guilty."
