“What is your favourite time of the day?”

“Bedtime!”

I am a long sleeper. Always was. When I was a teenager, my mother just could not wake me up in time to go to school. Don’t get me wrong, I loved school — I just could not and would not wake up in time.

I remember on one occasion feeling so sleepy in the morning: I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth and I was too tired, so I sat down on the floor still brushing my teeth and I fell asleep. My mother found me two hours later, sleeping in the bathroom.

On another occasion, after getting dressed up for school I went back into my bedroom and sat down on the bed, just to rest for a minute, and again, I fell asleep. I was woken up by my sister a few hours later.

I could sleep anywhere — on planes, trains, cars, taxis, subway, ferry, in cinemas. When I travelled to Tokyo I blended in with everyone on the tube — half of the train was asleep, because of the long commuting time.

My parents used to be very frustrated with me: I would skip morning classes, I would get late to certain appointments (especially doctors), my GP even charged me for all the missed appointments with him because of my inability to make it in time for my medical checkups.

Whenever I sleep for less than 10 hours my mood decreases and I don't feel my sharpest. You see, we all need “optimum” sleep. But what works for you, may not work for me.

I need my 10 hours of sleep to feel good, alert, productive and “happier”. I stopped making excused and embraced it — now I never make any appointments in the early morning.

I start work after 11 AM and I avoid travelling before 9 AM. Many people don’t understand it and wish to label me as “lazy” when I am not.

8 hours of sleep is not enough for me to function 100 %.

I’ve used to be a very exhausted person I used to take on early morning flights and early meetings but I realized that in the long run it doesn’t make me happy and makes me “age ”faster. People used to put me down and make jokes because of my sleeping.

I need to sleep longer than others, and I am certain there are many people out there who feel the same, so for you all — I’ve found reasons why it's okay to sleep 10 hours a day, and why you too should not feel guilty about it! Here they are.

You might wake up NOT ALONE!

Have you ever heard of “beauty sleep”?

Well, it looks like that you can sleep yourself into beauty according to numerous studies. Look it's obvious that if you deprive yourself of sleep you will develop dark circles around your eyes and your skin looks dry.

But when you sleep like I do your skin is more likely to stay elastic and wrinkle-free. It’s time to stop wasting all the money on those creams and just sleep in because that’s all you need to look better.

If you sleep less you will likely wake up with an “unattractive” face. We all wish to look energetic, fit and attractive. In other words, if you sleep longer you will raise your chances of looking “sexier” and the next time you go to bed, you might not be going to bed alone. Wink, wink.

You may lose weight because you’ve skipped pancakes.

Experts have connected lack of sleep with increased hunger and weight gain. The more you sleep, the more rested you are the less you wish to eat.

That is why I don’t do breakfast, I do brunch instead.

If you don’t get enough sleep it might be harder for you to control your appetite and might end up choosing the more “fatty” food or overeat, especially later in the day. Sleep plays a fundamental role in regulating how your body uses food for energy. The lesson is — listen to your body, if you need more sleep, then have it.

You may make the right decision for once in your life!

Do you feel stuck? You can’t make the decision? Do you feel “confused”?

Sleep on it!

I don’t make decisions in the evening, I always have to feel rested enough, before making a decision. I take my time.

A study conducted that people make better decisions after a good nights sleep.

Next time you wish to break up with your partner during a heated argument in the middle of the night — don’t. Sleep on it.

You may finally learn something new.

I’ve gone through the university by staying up all night preparing for the next day's exam. Hoverwer not always I’ve passed an exam. Only later I’ve realized that by doing so I was only depriving myself of sleep and I have not learned any better.

Being well-rested increases both our productivity and performance on learning-related tasks. Lack of sleep directly affects our memory and therefore we are more likely to forget and make mistakes on tasks.

You might not need the mood stabilizers.

I am very “grumpy” when I don’t have my 10-hour sleep a day. Sleep helps me freshen up and “recharge” my mind. Quite often, I meditate before sleep or even undergo sleep hypnosis — I love it.

The next day, my mind feels “decluttered”. When we sleep our brain processes all the information that we have received during the day. This helps us learn, “stabilize” and see things more clearly the next day.

Experts say that mental health issues are linked to poor sleep. Poor sleep is also connected with an increased risk of death by suicide. So, before going to your GP and getting chill pills for improving your mood, rather ask yourself:

“Are getting enough sleep?”

If not — snooze the alarm.

No stress!

We all feel stressed, from work, relationships, finances or because of anything else. We all deal differently with stress. Stress can affect our sleep.

Many of us, had an experience of being unable to fall asleep because of thoughts racing through our minds in the middle of the night. On the other hand, a good night’s sleep can have the opposite effect and relax the systems in your body that are responsible for this stress response.

But how do we battle stress in order to gain that good night's sleep?

I’ve learnt to “unwind” before going to be, I practise meditation, deep breathing and I listen to guided meditations. These techniques helped me prepare for a good sleep.

Sometimes I also exercise before going to bed, usually at least 3 hours before going to bed and afterwards I have a hot bath. We need to realize that we will not be able to sort any issues with thinking about them while in bed, we will only get more stressed and will sleep poorly and then the next day we won't be able to make the right decisions.

Learning to prioritize your sleep is essential to becoming a happier and healthier person.

More sleep? More Sex!

The better sleep I have the more I am in the mood for sex. Better sleep is tied to better hormone production and an increase in our energies.

Making sure to get enough good sleep will help to put you in a more positive headspace. When you’re feeling good, you look good and you are “kinder” to your loved ones.

Getting enough sleep helps me have healthy interpersonal relationships and have more “fun” in bed. If you know what I mean.

You might live a few years longer.

Getting a good night’s sleep can help to keep your immune system fighting fit germs. When we feel sick, we rest a lot — leaving our bodies to repair and rebuild the energy. So a good night’s sleep helps strengthen our body’s immune system and become stronger.

In the long run, if you allow yourself to have a good nights sleep you might not only become more resilient to illnesses you might also increase your life expectancy.

Overall you might be happier!

Sleep-deprived people are likely sadder. If you find that you’re feeling down one of the first things you should do is note down how well you’re sleeping.

Even just a few more hours of sleep per night can significantly change your mood.

Next time you tell yourself that you “must” wake up earlier, even though you are very tired — choose to love yourself and put yourself (your needs) first and snooze. Your older self will be grateful to you.

Good night!
