It was the middle of a frosty winter. The whole town moaned under the heaviness of the snowstorms, all its citizens seeking their cozy homes away from the cold wind. Fog emerged from here and there messing with everyone’s eyes as if they went blind. You couldn’t be able to see your own hands even if you tried stretching them above your head.

The silence emerged in the afternoons, and no one was brave enough to clean the streets, which everyone agreed was a waste of energy and time. Cars were stuck on the icy street, looking like they were abandoned for ages. Everything was covered in white, gray, and brown bringing misery to the once joyful city. Winter has always been like that. It has been trapping families inside their homes as if it was part of an evil plan of a long-forgotten villain.

Still, you could spot only a few colorful drops coming from the pretty outfit of a brave girl who was wandering around like nothing could harm her – not even the intimidating, freezing wind. The girl suddenly stopped in the middle of the street where no car was driving in such bad weather and started waving her hands and doing twirls. She did a few bunny leaps leaving behind traces in the huge, blocks of snow.

She loved winter more than anything and enjoyed gazing into the snowflakes that kept falling from the white sky. She would try catching a few of them only to abort the mission, thinking that would hurt them and disrupt their beautiful dancing. So she only looked up and tried tracking down all sorts of snowflake shapes. They were hard to be seen with the bare eye, but not for her.

She started walking towards a narrower alley to warm herself up and admire more winter views. During her walk, she felt a snowball hitting her head. She frowned as she turned to yell at the guilty person, and to her surprise, there was nobody nearby. She thought that it was only snow falling off from the tree branches, but she second-guessed herself that the snow was too hardened for it to just come at her like that. She tried searching discretely with her eyes for someone moving around, and after a few seconds, she was about to give up and move on. She felt a pair of mysterious, heavy hands over her shoulders, to which she flinched slightly. Her voice wouldn’t come out of her mouth, but then she realized she didn’t even need to bother as the mysterious figure chose to reveal itself.

‚Boo!’ cried out the little boy, who was a few inches smaller than her, showing messy, snow-filled hair sticking out of his green and blue beanie.

She turned around to see who was the boy, observing every bit of his features. He was b on the chubby side, his upper chest proudly showing as he felt victorious over pranking her. Despite him being like a little snowball himself, his arms and legs were rather thin. She noticed how he had a wide mischievous grin on his face, as he winked at her, showing just one blue eye for a few seconds. The moment after that, he showed both his beautiful sky-like eyes at which she found herself gazing. The silence broke as the little fellow opened his mouth to talk to her. it

‚ Heyyyy! I gotcha! I gotcha! I win!! You lose! I’m the winner! Who’s the winner?! This guy here!’ he chanted in a sing-song kind of voice, pointing his index finger at himself and laughing the loudest he could.

‚You!!!!! You, mister!! You better take your words back! Why did you decide to disturb my peaceful walk?!’ she started scolding him as anger boiled up her veins.

‚ For pure entertainment purposes. I was bored, and you were the only one I could play with here.’ he replied, sticking his tongue out at her.

She gasped at his rude gesture and slapped the boy slightly over his head to stop him from his cheekiness.

They heard a faint carol being played in one of their neighbors’ houses as background music and they looked into each others' eyes as if their minds were connected through telepathy.

‚ Let’s go, and take a sneak peek!’, shouted in unison.

‚ I thought you were on Santa’s nice list, but who knew you’re the eavesdropping type.’ added the boy smiling brightly at her.

‚ Hmpf, that’s because I’m an outsider to my whole family, and this is the only way to participate in the conversations.’ she said crossing her arms and turning her back on him.

‚ Oh, please, don’t get mad at a little, innocent joke.’ he defended himself sheepishly.

‚ Come on, let’s go unless you want to miss the whole song.’

That was the last word she said, and the next moment she grabbed his hand and took him for a run guiding him as they followed the beautiful tune.

They walked carefully through the blocks of snow and snuck behind the fence. They noticed a hole in one of the fence’s woods, taking turns in peeping at their neighbors’ Christmas party. They both agreed they felt like attending a real concert since they had never gone to one.

Out of the blue, the dogs from the yard they were peeking at noticed them and started going rampage, barking loudly at their presence. They both fell on their backs at the sudden sound. They stood down in the snow for a few moments looking at each other in utter shock.

The girl cleared her throat, in an attempt to catch the small boy’s attention, who immediately responded.

‚ We’d better get going before we get caught! Come on.’ she said as she took the lead, only for him to follow silently.

They ran so fast that they stopped for a grasp of air, leaning their hands on top of each own’s bent knees.

The boy started to laugh causing the girl to raise an eyebrow in disbelief.

‚ Are you in the right state of mind, or have you lost it when you saw the dogs’ big sharp teeth?’

‚ To your disappointment, no, not at all.’ he wore a wide smirk on his face.

‚ Well, then? What is it?! Could you care to share what’s so funny?’

‚ As a matter of fact – everything.’ he stated firmly, confusing his newly made friend.

‚ Uhm. How so?’ she pressed since she was still finding herself in utter confusion.

‚ THIS. WAS. SUCH. A. – GREAT ADVENTURE!!!’ he exclaimed, letting himself fall on the snowy ground smiling like a fool.

‚ Remind me how almost being caught is a fine adventure?’

‚ Well, for your information, I've never had a real friend until I kicked your butt in this crazy snowball fight. When I won, I knew you were my cherished prize.’ he added as his smile grew so bright, that it could have blinded anyone passing.

‚ Ugh.....What if I refuse you?’ she asked cheekily.

‚ You can’t. I won your heart fair and square.’ the boy said victoriously.

‚ I doubt that, but I can at least agree with you on the BEING FRIENDS part.’

He paced towards her and took a grip of both her hands, to which she flinched in surprise.

‚ Come on. I know you’d love me once you get to know me. Do you promise we’d meet here from time to time? It’s better than having ZERO friends.’ he begged her throwing a wink at her.

‚ I, I, err. Oh, forget it, what do I have to lose anyway?’ she smiled as they linked their pinkies to seal the promise of continuing to have the time of their life together.
