Funerals are naturally somber occasions. However, imagine the perplexity that would arise if the woman whose funeral you were attending unexpectedly appeared at her own ceremony. In such a situation, I would swiftly retreat to a safer location. Astonishingly, this is not a hypothetical scenario; it actually occurred in 2015. Moreover, this is not an isolated incident, as there have been numerous instances where individuals have seemingly defied logic and appeared at their own funerals. Therefore, let us prepare ourselves for some astonishing tales as we delve into the times when people defied expectations and made an appearance at their own funeral.

A vengeful ghost.

Back in February 2015,

a Burundian woman named Noela Rukundo took her last breath.

The devoted wife and mother of eight had relocated to Australia several years ago, but she traveled to Burundi to attend her stepmother's funeral. Unfortunately, she experienced a tragic accident during her visit. Her loved ones and friends in Australia had already come to terms with the fact that they would never see her again. Consequently, preparations were made for her funeral, and the ceremony took place a few days later. At approximately 7:30 PM that evening, Balenga, Noela's husband, bid farewell to the last of the well-wishers and turned to go inside. However, he was startled beyond belief when he saw Noela standing there, as clear as day! Balenga's face drained of color, but Noela simply smiled and exclaimed, "Surprise!" So, what on earth had occurred? Had Noela truly returned from the dead? To uncover the truth, we must journey back in time a few days. On the evening of February 17th, following her stepmother's funeral, a weary and emotionally drained Noela stepped outside to get some fresh air.

Upon her immediate action, a man approached her with a firearm, causing Noela to feel an overwhelming sense of fear. In response, she raised her hands in surrender and was directed into a vehicle, where she found herself seated between two other individuals. To prevent her from seeing her surroundings, they covered her eyes with a scarf and swiftly drove off into the darkness. After some time had passed, Noela sensed a change in her surroundings as she was being relocated. Her hands were then bound, and the scarf was removed, revealing that she was now confined to a chair within a warehouse. Standing before her were the men responsible for her abduction, who disclosed that they had been hired by an individual to permanently silence her. Overwhelmed with terror and confusion, Noela struggled to think clearly. The men proceeded to contact the person who had ordered the attack, putting the call on speakerphone. When Noela heard the voice on the other end, she was utterly astounded. It belonged to none other than her own husband, Balenga. The shock was too much for her to bear, and she lost consciousness.

Noela woke up once again as the armed man placed the phone down. However, something incredible occurred. The trio assured her that they never harmed women or children and would release her. Noela couldn't determine if it was a cruel prank or not, but after the hitmen contacted Balenga again and informed him that the task had been accomplished, they actually kept their promise! Noela was then bundled back into the car and left by the side of a road, but she wasn't left empty-handed. The hitmen gave her a memory card containing recorded phone conversations between them and her husband, enabling her to present evidence to the police. It was quite a surprising turn of events. Then, they disappeared. It was time for Noela to return to Australia. Unbeknownst to her, her husband had suspected her of infidelity, something she vehemently denies. In what could be considered an extreme overreaction, he had hired the hitmen to eliminate her while she was far away in Burundi! When they informed him that the job was done, he had lied to her family and friends, claiming that she had been involved in a tragic accident. My goodness!

And well within the confines of the coffin! It was a complete shock to everyone. After the initial surprise wore off, Matthew Wall was bombarded with questions about how he ended up in the coffin in the first place. He couldn't provide any answers, as he had no recollection of how he got there. The villagers were both relieved and perplexed by this bizarre turn of events. The funeral quickly turned into a celebration of Matthew's unexpected resurrection. People rejoiced and praised the miracle that had occurred. Matthew, on the other hand, was just grateful to be alive and reunited with his loved ones. The incident became a local legend, and the village of Braughing was forever marked by the extraordinary tale of the man who slept through his own funeral.

It is uncertain what exactly happened, but it is possible that Matthew was experiencing symptoms of narcolepsy, a rare brain condition that can cause sudden deep sleep episodes. This could have been mistaken for death at the time. Despite the confusion, Matthew was rescued and went on to marry his fiance, living for another 24 years. This unusual event even led to the creation of a holiday in the village called Old Man's Day, which is still celebrated today. The annual traditions include tolling church bells, singing songs, and oddly enough, clearing leaves from the lane. It may seem strange, considering that leaves were what saved Matthew. Nevertheless, the lesson to be learned is clear: always check a coffin before burying it, as you never know what might be happening inside.
