When I think of the word “monster” I think of my daughter. It was an involuntary reflex, an automatic thought as my academic husband would have called it, the association between “daughter” and “monster” carved into the recesses of my brain, my neurons easily connecting the two concepts together.

The vultures might as well be circling overhead. I often think back to the day I met my husband and wonder, if we had never met, then maybe the world would not be this harsh, desolate, gray that it is now. Dying slowly, quietly.
