Every Time I Started Cooking, My Dog Ran Out of the Kitchen. Here is How I Finally Uncovered His Secret
I wouldn’t call myself a Michelin-star chef, but I genuinely love to cook, and I do it quite often. It is my way of relaxing after a long day. But I have a companion in my house who does not share this culinary passion. His name is Max. To be specific, my four-legged troublemaker is a Maltese—just so you can picture him. He is an absolute sweetheart, a little white cloud of joy, and like almost all slightly spoiled dogs, he is a professional beggar. The exact second food touches the dining table, Max is there, looking at me with those big, melting eyes.

Yet, for months, we had a bizarre routine. The moment I walked into the kitchen and decided to cook a proper meal, Max would panicking, sprint out of the room, and disappear to some unknown corner of the apartment. He would only return when the cooking noise stopped and I was ready to serve the food on the table.
For a long time, I had absolutely no idea what was going on. It made no sense. Max loved food. He felt a deep, personal responsibility to taste everything his human was eating. If I sat down with a snack, he was my shadow. On regular afternoons, he could sit on the kitchen floor for hours, perfectly still, waiting for a single crumb to fall from the counter. He was faster than a vacuum cleaner. But the second I picked up a frying pan or a pot, the script was always the same. Flash-like escape, total disappearance, and a tactical return only when the meal was finished.
I started to worry. Did he hate the smell of raw ingredients? Was he terrified of the sound of sizzling oil? I felt a bit insulted, to be honest. Was my cooking really that offensive to his senses? Max would just vanish, and I kept guessing, looking for answers in all the wrong places.
Then, one evening, everything changed. I had just finished cooking a dinner and called out to him, telling him that the stove was off and he could come back to keep me company. As I turned around, I caught his expression. Max wasn't hidden in the bedroom this time. He was standing completely still right on the threshold, frozen between the hallway and the kitchen. But he wasn’t looking at me, and he wasn’t looking at the food on the counter. His gaze was locked onto something high above the stove. He was staring directly at the range hood.
I stood there, looking from my tiny dog to the big metal machine above me. I decided to test a theory. I walked over and switched the kitchen exhaust fan back on, turning it up to its absolute maximum power. The effect was instant. Max’s ears dropped down, he turned around with a look of pure betrayal, and walked away back into the hallway.
I didn't say a word. I just walked back and turned the range hood completely off. For a few seconds, the kitchen fell silent. And then, lo and behold, a little white head peeked around the corner. Max was standing back in the kitchen, his eyes shining bright, already licking his lips and wagging his tail. It was like magic. In that exact moment, the puzzle pieces finally clicked together.
The mystery was solved. The range hood, when running on high, emits a high-pitched mechanical hum and vibrations. To my human ears, it just sounded like ordinary background noise—something I completely ignored. But to a dog's incredibly sensitive hearing, that sound must have been an absolute nightmare, an intense, piercing frequency that made him want to escape the room.
Needless to say, I still use my range hood, but I never turn it past the lowest setting anymore. Max still prefers to maintain a respectful distance near the doorframe while I chop vegetables, but he no longer runs away in terror. It taught me a great lesson about our pets. The sounds, frequencies, and hums that we don't even register in our modern, busy lives are heard by our animals with an intensity we can barely imagine. Sometimes, a dog isn't being difficult or stubborn. They just see—and hear—the world differently than we do.
