**Military Rule and Transition (1970 - 1999):**
Following the civil war, Nigeria experienced a series of military regimes characterized by corruption, economic mismanagement, and human rights abuses. Leaders like Generals Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Muhammed, and Olusegun Obasanjo shaped this period with varying degrees of success and failure. The discovery and exploitation of oil provided significant revenue but also led to increased corruption and social inequality. Political instability persisted, with frequent coups and counter-coups. In 1999, after prolonged pressure for democratization, Nigeria transitioned to civilian rule with the election of Olusegun Obasanjo as president, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic and a renewed hope for democratic governance.
