The federal government, determined to maintain national unity, launched a military campaign to reclaim the secessionist territory. The war resulted in widespread suffering, including famine and displacement, with an estimated one to three million people losing their lives. The conflict ended in 1970 with Biafra's reintegration into Nigeria, but its legacy of division and trauma persisted
