**British Colonization (1861 - 1960):**
British involvement in Nigeria began in earnest in the mid-19th century, culminating in the annexation of Lagos in 1861. Over the following decades, the British extended their control through treaties, military conquest, and diplomacy, consolidating territories into the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria by 1914. British rule imposed new administrative structures, economic policies, and educational systems, significantly altering Nigerian society. The colonial economy was geared towards the extraction and export of resources such as palm oil, cocoa, and groundnuts. Despite economic exploitation and social disruption, British rule also introduced modern infrastructure and institutions, setting the stage for Nigeria's future development.

**Benin Empire (1180 - 1897):** The Benin Empire, located in what is now southern Nigeria, is renowned for its sophisticated art and architecture. From the 12th century, Benin City became a major center of culture and commerce. The Oba (king) of Benin ruled with a centralized authority, and the empire's wealth was bolstered by trade in ivory, pepper, and later, slaves. The Benin Bronzes, intricate plaques and sculptures, are celebrated examples of African art. European contact began in the late 15th century with the Portuguese, leading to increased trade. The British annexed Benin in 1897, marking the end of its sovereignty but not its cultural influence.

Flags flew freely in the summer breeze. They consisted of a gray and white human brain against a black background. Scales of gold sat just overtop the image of the organ. The sun rose at just the zenith and shared its light and warmth with the attendees to one of the country-states’ greatest accomplishments: the graduation of two women who had been in a halfway house and found their passions for art design and communications. Mala and Sheltham looked on with sunglasses and cheered the graduates. With the knowledge they had months to go before being up on that stage, they looked at each other and grinned. After the ceremony, they walked into a pizza restaurant that fit their budgets.

Happy Pride Month, all! I love Pride Month and everything that comes with it; the celebration, the festivities, the prestige. Pride Month is the ultimate beacon of positivity. Now sadly, there are a bunch of people in society who aren't really crazy about Pride Month and have their things to say against it. To those people, I'll only say this. There's a special place reserved for people who are against Pride Month. I'm too much of a gentleman to say it here, but I'll give a few hints: it rhymes with "bell," and I'm not talking about the city in Michigan.
