**Benin Empire (1180 - 1897):**

The Benin Empire, located in what is now southern Nigeria, is renowned for its sophisticated art and architecture. From the 12th century, Benin City became a major center of culture and commerce. The Oba (king) of Benin ruled with a centralized authority, and the empire's wealth was bolstered by trade in ivory, pepper, and later, slaves. The Benin Bronzes, intricate plaques and sculptures, are celebrated examples of African art. European contact began in the late 15th century with the Portuguese, leading to increased trade. The British annexed Benin in 1897, marking the end of its sovereignty but not its cultural influence.
