Key observations from the second Republican presidential debate

The conclusion of the second 2024 Republican presidential primary debate mirrored its commencement, with the party's preeminent front-runner being former President Donald Trump, who has yet to make an appearance alongside his competitors on stage.

The seven Republican candidates who participated in the Wednesday night's confrontation at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, delivered a few noteworthy instances. Notably, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley expressed a significant amount of accumulated frustration towards entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, which left a lasting impression.

During the exchange, she candidly stated, "To be honest, every time I listen to your remarks, I cannot help but feel a slight decline in my intellectual capacity."

Two candidates also expressed their disapproval of Trump's absence. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida remarked that he was "unavailable for duty." Former Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey referred to the former president as "Donald Duck" and accused him of evading accountability by seeking refuge in his golf clubs instead of defending his performance on the public platform.

The Republican Party contenders also made initial criticisms of President Joe Biden. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina opined that instead of participating in the picket line with the striking auto workers' union in Michigan on Tuesday, Biden should be present at the southern border. Former Vice President Mike Pence suggested that Biden should be unemployed. Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota accused Biden of meddling with the principles of free markets.

Nevertheless, the outcome of the debate, which was organized by Fox Business Network and Univision, is improbable to alter the course of the Republican Party's competition, where Trump has consistently maintained a position of prominence in both national and early-state surveys.

The frequently disorganized and difficult to follow exchange of ideas could have resulted in a significant number of viewers disengaging from the debate entirely. Here are the key points to be derived from the second GOP primary debate:

The prudent strategy adopted by President Trump seems to yield positive results.

President Trump may have adopted a cautious strategy by opting out of the debates and pursuing a campaign strategy akin to that of an incumbent during the 2024 Republican Party primary.

However, it is difficult to ascertain how he would face substantial consequences among the party's electorate for his absence from Wednesday night's chaotic event, as he chose to prioritize addressing current and former union members in the vicinity of Detroit.

Trump's opponents launched several criticisms against him. DeSantis censured him for his excessive deficit spending. Christie derided him at the onset of the evening, referring to him as "Donald Duck" for evading the debate, and ultimately declared his intention to eliminate Trump from the GOP's political sphere.

"The individual in question has not only caused a significant rift within our political party, but has also caused divisions among families and friends across the entire nation," expressed the former governor. "It is imperative that he be removed from the political landscape and excluded from any further involvement in this process."

Nevertheless, Trump managed to evade substantial examination of his tenure in the Oval Office, despite facing a group of competitors who sought to appeal to voters with predominantly favorable opinions of his presidency.

In a formal statement, Chris LaCivita, senior adviser to the Trump campaign, expressed that the GOP debate held tonight was equally uninteresting and insignificant as the initial debate. Furthermore, LaCivita asserted that none of the statements made during the event would have any impact on the primary contest's dynamics.

According to a report by The Daily Caller on Thursday, it has been confirmed that President Trump will not be in attendance at the upcoming third Republican debate scheduled to take place in Miami on November 8th.

"The cessation of debates is imperative, as it is detrimental to the Republican Party," conveyed the ex-president to the conservative publication. "The prospect of a standout candidate emerging is highly unlikely."

An untidy duration of two hours.

The second GOP primary debate was plagued by frequent interruptions, excessive crosstalk, and prolonged disputes between the candidates and moderators regarding their allotted speaking time.

This poses a significant challenge for viewers endeavoring to comprehend the situation, while simultaneously exacerbating the predicament faced by these candidates in their pursuit to establish themselves as credible alternatives to the absent Trump.

In addition to adding complexity to the situation, it is noteworthy that certain candidates who ranked highly in the polls following Trump's tenure, namely DeSantis and Haley, exhibited a reluctance to engage in contentious discussions, particularly during the pivotal initial hour. The moderators made repeated efforts to facilitate the participation of the Florida governor, particularly at the outset. However, he was conspicuously absent from the proceedings for the initial 15 minutes.

Ramaswamy exhibited a relatively superior performance by speaking in a louder and faster manner than his competitors. However, he encountered frequent impediments when confronted with the intersection of his own arguments and the opposing criticisms from exasperated candidates such as Scott.

The moderator group is expected to face criticism for their inability to maintain control over the room during the initial thirty minutes. However, even in the midst of a disorderly debate, valuable insights can be gleaned about the individuals involved, which can be informative for the electorate.

Palmetto Pummeling

Throughout the entire night, Scott displayed a clear inclination for confrontation, and he eventually found his target in fellow South Carolinian, Haley.

He initiated his attack by accusing Haley of spending $50,000 on curtains in a $15 million subsidized location during her tenure as the US ambassador to the United Nations. Haley promptly responded with a defiant "Bring it."

The ensuing exchange between the two Republicans revolved around the topic of the curtains. Haley retorted, "Do your homework, Tim, because Obama purchased those curtains," while Scott persisted with his question, "Did you send them back? Did you send them back?" Haley then countered, "Did you send them back? You are the one who serves in Congress."

Although not the most contentious moment of the evening, it certainly ranked high. The conflict between these two South Carolina natives appeared deep-rooted, yet it is important to recall that approximately a decade ago, when Haley held the position of governor, she appointed Scott to his current Senate seat following Republican Jim DeMint's resignation. However, this presidential race seems to have eroded that confidence in Scott.

DeSantis' Performance Uneven in Republican Debate

During the recent Republican debate, DeSantis' performance was uneven as he found himself confronted by his competitors for the first time. Positioned at the center of the stage, his position was considerably less secure than it had been in the previous debate in Milwaukee.

Despite the rules allowing candidates to respond when invoked, DeSantis allowed Fox to slip to commercial break when Pence appeared to blame him for a jury decision to award a life sentence, rather than the death penalty, to the mass murderer in the Parkland high school shooting. It is worth noting that DeSantis opposed the decision and championed a law that made Florida the state with the lowest threshold to put someone on death row going forward. Additionally, he did not respond when Pence accused him of inflating Florida's budget by 30% during his tenure.

Later, he allowed Scott to have the final say regarding Florida's Black history curriculum standards, and he struggled to defend himself when Haley accurately pointed out that he had taken measures to block fracking in Florida on his second day in office.

Prior to the initial debate in Milwaukee, a prominent strategist for a pro-DeSantis super PAC informed donors that "79% of the viewers tonight will watch the debate and switch it off after 19 minutes."

According to this assessment, the governor of Florida managed to speak for the first time on Wednesday night just in the nick of time, precisely 16 minutes into the debate. And when he finally had the opportunity to speak, he continued his more aggressive attacks on the leading candidate of the GOP, as he had previously hinted in recent weeks.

DeSantis drew a parallel between Trump's absence in California and Biden, whom DeSantis criticized for being "completely absent in terms of leadership" regarding the economy, holding him responsible for inflation and the autoworkers strike.

"In addition, another notable absence is Donald Trump, who is missing in action," DeSantis stated. "He ought to be present on this platform tonight. It is his duty to defend his track record, which he owes to all of you."

However, DeSantis subsequently refrained from extensively pursuing Trump, until his appearance on Fox News after the debate, during which he issued a challenge for a one-on-one confrontation with the former president. DeSantis concluded the debate on a resolute note, demonstrating his leadership by declining moderator Dana Perino's proposal to eliminate one of the candidates. He concluded the evening by firmly dismissing the notion that Trump's lead in the polls was significant in September.
