What Adult Acne Taught Me

Having acne as an adult

I was lucky when I was in high school, I was expecting more and got a lot less. I thought I would have acne like my older sisters. However, acne decided to wait a few years…well a little more than a few years. Acne decided to come for me well into my adult life, to give you some context I am 30 years old. I only have one thing to blame for that and it’s Covid-19. You might be thinking, but how are the two related? Well, it came down to protecting ourselves from the illness we had to put on extra protection and I happen to work in a hospital on my day job, so I have to put on a mask it was a strict policy. I sat at my desk handing out masks and wearing a mask 8 hours a day or sometimes 12 because of extra shifts. So I would come home and after taking off my mask I would look in the mirror and sure enough acne showed up on my chin. I started to change my mask every few hours in hopes of it getting better, my face was starting to itch. I needed a solution, so I headed over to the experts. Who were they? These experts were the sales people at Sephora. I found an available sales representative to help, which happened to be a boy, I say boy because he couldn’t have been older than eighteen, yet with his perfect complexion and honestly best eye make-up, we headed over to where the useful skin products were.

he recommended that I try things with retinal and it helped clear up my skin from the blemishes, even though it's on the more expensive side of skin product it has really helped me clear those nasty red pimples and the nice thing is I don't need to use a ton of it either, so I highly recommended it, I use one drop on each cheek, my forehead and my chin and then I spread it all over every night and every morning:

For the more prominent pimples I use this, for some reason I think that cream works better for applying to certain spots:

I bought both of them and I have noticed some differences in my skin. I then went home, and I started to do more research on what causes adult acne and according to Harvard Health Publishing it can occur if your hormones change, and maybe I had hit the age where I am expected to have children, so my body found out it can make acne appear. According to this journal it can occur because of the diet changes and since working in health care I eat less sugar, but then every time I eat any sort of sugar, my face breaks out.

The sad thing is, when you go to the doctor's office and ask for any treatment when being a woman, they automatically recommend birth control and coming from someone who has experimented with different types of birth control I do not agree that is the best option at all. My hormones are now all messed up, luckily now that I've gone off these pills everything seems more regular.

A lot of other people swear by using Clinique products their skin does clear up:

others also use proactiv, but i think that both my sisters did try it, but it did not work out for them, but I also think that everybody's skin reacts differently to products, but I've heard that your acne gets worse once you stop using it, but again I think everyone has different skin:

I know that both my sisters had switched to using this and I think it helped their skin:

Since getting acne as an adult, I feel like I understand why people get acne, it's mostly a hormonal change or it's dietary change as well. I've learned that I should not be lazy about leaving my make-up on, that different make-up remover wipes cause my skin to break out like crazy, so I know to stay away from Burt's bees because it irritates my skin. So, I turn to buying these wipes instead:

I find that for my skin anything that is labeled for sensitive skin I tend to get allergic reactions to, so a lot of these things are just through trial and error.
