So we live in the 21st century right? Are you sure now?
As soon as I walk into the tattoo shop my ears are bombarded with heavy metal music and the sweet, sweet buzzing of needles. I take a seat and chat with my artist about the piece I came in for and soon the shop help hands me the mandatory paperwork. She starts admiring my already sleeved left arm and begins to share her own ideas for her next piece and where on her body she wants to place it. “I think I want to start adding to my legs. I just love those pictures where they’re in the bathtub and their tattoos just look so good!”
Disclaimer: I am not a certified piercer, however I feel my experience as someone who's been stabbed with the needle enough is valuable... Somewhat. As of writing this, I've had 8 piercings over the past few years. All but 1 are still lodged in various places. I've had the usual useless dangly bits done; both earlobes, 2 oral piercings with different jewelry each time, cartilage, eyebrow, and one through the nipple. I feel like I'm well-versed enough to give my own personal insight.
Body contouring is something I began doing about two years ago. A little background on my tanning journey: I fell in love with lay-down beds after one session a few days before my junior prom. Looking to go back in the winter, I was sad to discover in the short months leading up to December of that year, my state had passed a new regulation stating that even with parental consent, no one under 18 years old could tan. It was shortly after my 18th birthday that I began a religious tanner. As much as I enjoy spending time in the sun and long hours at the beach, my schedule doesn't always agree. At the time, it didn't allow for much time at the gym either; also at this time, I had looked into different tanning oils, lotions, and sprays in search of the most affordable, effective way to get a deeper bronze faster.
Body ornamentation and modification is older than humankind. We were not the first to use it. So far, Neanderthals are the first that we know of. They used shell beads and feathers for self-decoration. When this may have started is controversial, but Neanderthals were around for at least 400,000 years. These discoveries carry very strong implications. One must have the consciousness of self. There is no need to enhance oneself unless you are self-conscious. Having an inward view is one of those prerequisites for being human, but Neanderthal had it. Early body enhancement was most likely used to differentiate among people. The more extensive reserved for the head of the group, certain marks to delineate a pair-bonded female, a little something for the healer and so on. Once body decoration began, it never stopped. You would be hard put to find a person today who does not wear make-up, has pierced ears, wears an attractive watch, has facial hair, or some form of decoration.

So several years ago I had finally gotten the nerve up to try and get a Brazilian wax. I had been hearing about getting waxed for a while now from several girlfriends of mine. So after some research and saved a little money off to the side, I was ready. I asked for the name and phone number of the place that one of my girlfriends went. I thought that since she went all the time, and was dating one of my roommates, that she would be a good person to ask. She gave me the phone number and I called to set my appointment.
As a rule of thumb, let me say that the most important thing when it comes to one's persona lies in being comfortable in your own skin. Whether that means staying "all-natural" until the end of your days or indulging in the occasional cosmetic touch-up is ultimately up to you and you alone. But as far as I'm concerned, a body is a malleable thing.
Ever since I was young, I've loved art and I consider myself an artist. I have always been mesmerized by tattoos and couldn't wait to cover my body in them.
Monday morning in a 2 bedroom apartment in Leeds and it is slap bang in the middle of one of the coldest winters the United Kingdom has faced in over 80 years. I wake from the the peacefulness of my dreams, where I was probably re-enacting my earlier years in the Mother-land. Where I would run around with no care in the world, as the glow and warmth of the sun would slowly descend just over our shoulders. Out of the warmth of my dreams and in to a cloud of my own breaths condensation, I attempt to adjust to this new environment I found myself in.
