Whats really needed to set up a home recording studio

The fundamentals required

It all began with little knowledge and experience. The definition of knowledge translates into know how of softwares and programs and their general functions. Experience is gained by applying the knowledge. Before one can pursue the art of music production the basic knowledge of the systematic process of audio frequencies must be attained.

This is designed to give you knowledge of the basic set up required to successfully get you on the way to start making great audio materials.

Firstly the correct surroundings is an important factor to consider when setting up your workspace. Throughout the years i have witnessed box room studios with small cupboards as vocal rooms. I can't stress enough "Avoid at all cost!".

The second factor to consider is the type of computer to be used for production. Every producer is different and unique in their own way as per what they are comfortable and experienced using. Growing up i have always used Apple as i did start out with a normal PC but since i have made the switch i have never looked back. Personally i have always found the audio and production quality to be far more superior but as i mentioned before each producer/engineer has their own preference.

Third factor to consider is the software. There are many production softwares that are available and each has their own unique features, for example i started out using Reason and Cubase on the PC until i made that transition to Apple Mac Pro and since then "i have never looked back". The software market has since then evolved and is more diverse where you can access programs such as FL Studio, Pro Tools, Cubase and others but in my view it is always best to educate yourself on more than one software while maintaining your main preference for production.

Forth factor to consider with the space, computer type and software already decided on the next step is hardware. In the modern world there are 2 types of studios 1: Digital + Analogue & 2: Fully digital. It is ones responsibility to decide on the set up and audio feel that you are potentially hoping to obtain. In the bigger commercial recording studios you would normally find a number of analogue units ranging from compressors to FX machines along side massive mixing desks. An important factor to consider is the mixer type for example an analogue/digital mixer with motorised faders or a virtual mixer thats built in within your chosen production software. In this instance i will keep it simple and suggest to start out with the software's virtual mixer and as you progress you can start branching out to various other mixers. As well as the importance of a mixer equally or important is the need for a quality audio interface as this plays a massive part in your audio in & out quality. Note: With a great Audio Interface you can produce exceptionally great music without the need for a mixer but there can be limitations which relate to the number of input and outputs available. There are numerous great quality interfaces available that are capable of producing industry standard recordings as equally there are many that do not. I would always advise to research for the best option for the individual as some studios function on minimal input/outputs whilst others the numbers are imperative as they have factors to think about for example recording band, live instruments and so on.

Fifth factor to consider is the importance of choosing the right speakers & headphones. Different speakers emits different level of frequencies which in turn makes some more accurate than others. For example a musician on a budget producing EDM/Dance music would more tend to lean towards the KRK range. I have had KRK Rokit 5 & 8's for many years and have been very impressed with the results especially in my dancehall/dance/electronic productions. The sound the emit is great for the price and they are very recommended by many producers, engineers and blogs.

Finally the last factor to consider is quality of the wires used to connect the equipments together. This is equally important as wires transmit the frequencies throughout your devices as poor built leads can potentially result in loss quality. Now with all the pieces in places to build a functioning home studio I hope you guys have fun and produce some great sounding music.
