The Legacy of Mars Argo

Brittany Alexandria Sheets emerged on the internet in 2013 as her persona Mars Argo on her youtube channel grocerybaddottv and debuted with her album Technology is a Dead Bird the same year.

Unfortunately, like many other fans of Mars Argo, I only discovered Mars with the rise of Poppy in the second half of 2015. After watching a lot of videos of Poppy and listening to her music, Mars Argo popped up on my recommendation section on youtube.

It was the Using You music video with Mars Argo and her iconic blonde hair, big brown eyes, and pretty red lipstick as the thumbnail in my recommendation. I clicked on the video, mostly out of boredom, and instantly I fell in love.

Her voice is sweet like honey, and so was her whole style. Sweet and cute, wearing a cute dress with pretty blonde hair paired with a bit of dark makeup and a bit dark lyrics. In Using You, there are lines that say, “I was afraid to put myself on the line for a boy, ‘Til he put me in my place and showed me how to enjoy myself, I think I need your help”. The lyrics are creepy and a bit unsettling, but matching with her cute persona and voice she was an interesting character. An interesting character that before I knew it impacted my life.

I ended up finding more of her songs and watched more clips of her, and she quickly became one of my favorite artists. I loved her indie-rock-pop sound that felt very nostalgic and a bit sinister yet sweet. Her music is hypnotic, and comforting in a way, and I fell in love with her songs.

I also fell in love with her style. Mars Argo matching cute baby doll dresses and clothing with bright red lipstick and dirty combat boots inspired me to wear cute baby doll dresses paired with messy hair, dirty combat boots, and red lipstick.

Besides that, she appeared very cute and sweet, but the most interesting but sad thing that drew me to her, and drew many others, was how she disappeared from the world.

When Poppy came about, Poppy was working with Titanic Sinclair who also worked with Mars Argo. Titanic ended up throwing away the Mars Argo project and worked with Poppy, and Mars Argo disappeared. All her videos were gone, most of her music was off streaming platforms, all her social media was dead, and she completely dissipated into thin air.

At first, when she disappeared, people had no idea why she did. One day she was there, and the next day she vanished. There weren’t any statements made, no posts or updates, and the Mars Argo project was suddenly put on a halt. Mars Argo was completely gone, but her fans remained.

Actually, during her time away, she gained more fans. More people were listening to her music, finding more of her music on youtube, sharing rare clips and pictures of her, fan accounts popped up all over, and people were keeping her presence alive.

Most of the time when an artist disappears, they are forgotten, but for Mars Argo is was the opposite. People learned more about her and became invested in her. Maybe because people were enticed by this mysterious musician who left so little online, or maybe because Poppy was gaining traction and Poppy fans started to check out Mars Argo since they both worked with Titanic Sinclair.

Mars Argo was completely silent when all these fans came in and these new fans kept asking what happened to Mars Argo, but in 2018 we found out what happened.

Mars Argo came out and sued Poppy and Titanic for copying her, and sued Titanic for being abusive and manipulative to her in their entire relationship. Titanic would do such things like stalk her, control who she sees and talks to, show up at her house unannounced multiple times, break her things, and assault her.

She also revealed the reason why she basically disappeared was to get away from Titanic and not be able to be found by him. Fortunately, in 2019, she won the lawsuit and got the Mars Argo name back.

Since then, Mars Argo appeared here and there such as in films like Dinner In America, and posts a bit on social media. She even said she is working on music, which as a fan is very exciting to hear, but we have no idea when or even if she will release it.

Still, she doesn’t have much of an online presence which is understandable with the horrifying situation she was in she probably doesn’t want to put herself out there and want to focus on herself and getting better. She can take all the time she needs. She can even just never make music again, and her fans would probably be ok with it.

Mars Argo has such a dedicated fanbase that is so understanding, and that fanbase isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Her fans still share her music and photos and still pour out loving messages to her every day. I feel like Mars Argo will never go away entirely because she is kind of an internet phenomenon and a legend.

I mean she disappeared and gain more followers and fans during her disappearance. There isn’t an artist I can name that can disappear for years and gain so many fans and barely started with any in the beginning. Truly Mars Argo, from her music and fashion and personality, I think she is going to live online forever, and the legacy of Mars Argo will remain.
