Sunmi 'Tail' Comeback Review

Sunmi has made her comeback with “Tail” paired with “What The Flower”. I’m kind of glad that it is a double single, but also a bit disappointed because it is just a double single. I really was hoping it would be a mini album or a full album because we've only been getting singles from Sunmi since 2019. It would have been amazing to have a mini album, but I’m glad she gave us two songs instead of just one.

Now onto the title track, Tail.

Tail is a very sexy and dark song. It reminds me a lot of 24 hours and Full Moon with the sexiness and hints of darkness. Tail is a blend of 24 hours and Full Moon, and it gives her new or younger fans that haven’t heard either of those songs a taste of her 2013-2014 era. Actually in general it gives new fans of kpop the taste of 2nd generation kpop, and also makes 2nd gen stans a blast from the past with the song and concept.

Tail gives me a lot of cat women vibes, and is a mysterious song. It also reminds me of the 80s and is a bit nostalgic. Sunmi has always delved into that nostalgic 80s sound, and I’m glad she still is sticking with that sound because I love her take on it.

Tail is sinister, sultry, and seductive. I’m in love with the music video and the choreography with the use of legs being a tail, and the music video reminds me a lot of catwoman. Sunmi does a lot of cat-like movements, plus the use of leather and dark coloring is very reminiscent of catwoman. It also reminds me a lot of AOA like a cat because of the styling and sound of Tail, which is nice because I used to be a big fan of AOA so it’s nice to be reminded of the time I liked them.

With the song itself, honestly I did not like it at first. I was kind of bored of it and it felt lackluster, but after a few more listens it grew a lot on me. It’s not my favorite song by Sunmi, but it is still good and a bit different from what she has been giving us for the past few years. Tail is her sexiest song to date, and I love her voice. Sunmi has such a beautiful and unique vocal color, and her voice fits so well with this song. I’m also obsessed with the line “Make it right ‘till I die, baby”. It’s just the way she sings it and how sinister it sounds makes the line so captivating. Overall, this song is a grower and I do like it, especially the dark elements to it.

Tail - 8/10

Along with Tail, Sunmi released What The Flower which is a jazzy R&B type of song that is also dark like Tail. From the lyrics it sounds like a toxic breakup that is very stressful and sad. It is a haunting heartbreak song with interesting lyrics. Such as the title alone, being called “What The Flower” is intriguing and I wonder why she put “What The Flower” instead of “What The Fuck” or “What The Hell”. Plus using the word Flower makes it feel a bit more romantic in way, even though it is a sad song.

Another thing I like about What The Flower is that we get to focus on Sunmi’s vocals. I feel like many people don’t recognize Sunmi’s vocal talents, so it’s nice and refreshing to get a song that is entirely vocal based.

Actually I love What The Flower way more than Tail. It’s sexy yet dark like Tail, but more vocal heavy and has a jazzy feel that I love. It is a beautiful song that I adore.

What The Flower - 9/10

Overall I’m glad that Sunmi is back and she gave us a fantastic comeback.
