Songs for the burnt of Heart

We love songs about anti-love

Life is full of heartbreak, frustrated desires, unrequited love. Along comes a holiday dedicated to love, passion, romance; quickly appropriated by the card, flower, candy, and now the beef jerky industry. Because who doesn't love a beef jerky rose, amirite?

Never mind the silliness of the sappy grade school cards, forced upon obedient children to dutifully provide one to each member of the class. Later to be thrown out to show mass marketed love to a landfill.

Fond high school memories here of sitting in the car, in the dark, with my bestie.... parked on an overlooking bluff area, eating banana splits and commiserating about broken hearts from whichever swains were no longer ardent. Listening to Journey and Lovin Touchin & Squeezin while we bemoaned our newly single status.

Using the organ of the body that pumps blood as a symbol of romantic love seems a tad risky.. break the heart, destroy the body. The loins would be a more accurate symbol because the brain doesn't seem to get real involved with this sort of thing.

For those who are sick of romance and the mass market commercialization of such, I present some favorite Anti VD and anti-love songs. Listen til you hurt and hurt no more.

Live. Laugh. Love the Anti Love.

1. Love Hurts

2. Love Stinks

3. I Hate Myself for Loving You

4. I Miss the Misery

5. Every Breath You Take

6. Stranglehold

7. Closer

8. I'm Not in Love

9. Tainted Love

10. Lonely Boy

Number 1 is from Nazareth's world class Hair of the Dog album. Nazareth also did such songs as the title track, famous for the chorus “ Now you're messing with a son of a bitch”, Whiskey Drinking Woman, Beggars Day, Miss Misery, and Please Don't Judas Me. For pure hard rock bitterness, you can't beat Nazareth. No anti VD list would be complete without these raw voiced classics.

2d:

Love Stinks, from the 80s big hair era. Like veritable roadkill sometimes.

We all know it does,. Point taken.

3rd:

Joan Jett's group is responsible for the classic #3. Haven't we all felt that way at some time or another?

Self loathing is unproductive but somehow satisfying when expressed in hard rock. And who doesn't love the name Blackhearts?

# 4 on our countdown:

Halestorm: I Miss the Misery

“ I miss the bad things

“The way you hate me

I miss the screaming

The way that you blame me”

You can't get much more anti VD than this. Perfection.

#5...The famous stalker song by the Police: Every Breath You Take.

Looking over your shoulder yet for that ex that just can't seem to accept the break up?

Number 6 is a gruesome, dark and angry song. Violent. Could be taken several ways, but don't recommend playing for a romantic evening with the beloved. “The night I crushed your face” doesn't normally inspire the heart melt. And if it does... well... better look at what your relationship goals are.

Number 7, not Heaven:

Closer is darkly erotic. Not romantic, if you're into that sort of thing. Definitely not Hearts and Flowers. Could hold some appeal if..er... getting ****ed like an animal is appealing. However, I'm not anticipating a Hallmark Valentine's Day romance inspired by this song.

#8

I'm Not in Love by 10 CC: definitely dating myself.

A most adolescent approach to hopeless denial.

You could sing it to your main squeeze..the theme of the song is that he really is in love but doesn't want the object of his affection to know.. but prepare to be severely misunderstood.

Ninth on our esteemed Loveless List:

Tainted Love; again, an older song, done and redone by several artists.

“ Once I ran to you (I ran)

Now, I'll run from you

This tainted love you've given

I give you all a boy could give you “

Send the YouTube of this to the one using your heart for kickboxing practice.

Rounding out number 10 is the catchy “Lonely Boy” by the Black Keys.

He felt high above them, but now is hopelessly in love with someone who plays carelessly with his feels. But dang! He seems happy to be so unhappy.

If these aren't enough, a Google search for Anti VD song playlists yields over 1.3 million in less than a second. Enjoy!
