How Fyke Music Captures the Stages of the Emotional Rollercoaster Many of Us Experienced During the Coronavirus Pandemic

By. Angelica Garcia

Fyke is an electro-pop rock band recognized in the U.S. and the k-pop industry as a band dedicated to spreading mental health awareness. Their songs provide validation to people, showing that they are not alone. Members include Enik Lin, Mikee Fabella, Gerard Christian, Steven Delman, and Justin Wright. They hope their songs can reach out to as many people as possible, especially to those who have dealt with a lot in their lives. As a matter of fact, their band name symbolizes a huge fishing net, in which they hope to "capture" or "intrigue" a lot of fans who could recognize and resonate with the purpose and messages of their songs. With their moving, honest, and relatable music, they have managed to do so, gaining thousands of followers on Facebook and Instagram. They are geniuses at creating songs based on stigmatized topics that are difficult to talk about, like anxiety. This year, many people faced stress and anxiety more than ever due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Songs can represent so many things for different people, and in some ways, some of Fyke's songs captured what many of us felt during this time.

First of all, their song, "Monsters," can remind people of the initial shock many people had concerning the Coronavirus. In "Monsters," the lyrics that are relevant to this go, "I've been drifting away, thrown by the waves. I think I'm ok." It's like when the world transitioned from 2019 to 2020, we were all looking forward to the new year, but this pandemic came along like a giant "wave," and we were all surprised and unsure of how things would be like.

Towards the middle of the year, as we all had to continue to follow the necessary safety procedures, the song that correlates to how many people might have felt is "Somebody." In the beginning, I am sure that many of us couldn't believe how serious COVID-19 was and how we had to continue to take the necessary precautions, like self-quarantining. I am sure we all restlessly wondered, how much longer? The lyrics that relate to this in their song, "Somebody," go, "Don't tell me I'm dreaming. I'm so afraid . . . Somebody, tell me something." I can imagine how many of us would prefer the pandemic to be just a dream. As many of us do what we need to do to protect others and be safe, there's still this fear. Thankfully, we continue to hope, especially for everything to get back to normal. We eagerly wait for more good news. Thus, that's where the words, "Somebody, tell me something" comes in.

Throughout 2020, there would be days where we would wonder, "Is It Over?" like in Fyke's song with a title of those exact words. It goes, "Are we near the end? . . . Is it over? Am I still strung out? Am I sober? Have I hit the ground? Just get up, get up. Don't let them take me." In a way, in regards to the pandemic, the song shows how we want to be safe and healthy, we want to survive, and we want to go back to living normal lives. Throughout this year, many of us have dealt with a rollercoaster of emotions as the pandemic affected our lives. However, we do our best to stay resilient and optimistic, like in this song when it says, "get up." It's like we got to "get up" and try our best despite our circumstances.

Whenever we had to quarantine ourselves, many of us felt devastated because we had to avoid contact with people we care about. Fyke's song called "Run" featuring actor and singer Vanness Wu really portrayed this with the words, "I want to run to you, through these walls . . . Just the shadow of your warmth will make us gold." Basically, although we could connect with family and friends through messages on social media and video chats, it's not the same as meeting in person. It's like we would rather "run" to the ones we care about during quarantine than become separated. However, there are times where people could get together if they just follow the necessary safety procedures. Of course, this includes having temperature checks, social distancing, having hands washed thoroughly, sanitizing, and wearing a mask. However, we all still crave to go out or get together without having extra things to worry about.

Finally, in regards to the pandemic, Fyke's song, "Find a Way," presents optimism that things will get better someday after everything we've been through. This message can be portrayed with the words, "Don't say you never felt it . . . We both changed. It's overwhelming now. Now, we'll be ok. Somehow, things always turn around (round), sooner or later. It's ok. . . You know we'll find a way when we find a way." Right now, it's so important for us to keep our faith and hope that things will get better, especially with a vaccine ready and set for distribution.

In the meantime, no matter what your circumstances are, let's continue to do our best to live, survive, and move forward with our lives each day. As we continue to comply with the safety procedures necessary due to the Coronavirus, you can listen to Fyke's songs to help motivate you. They can also help validate whatever you might be feeling during this time. Again, Fyke is a band aimed towards mental health awareness. Check them out, and see if you can resonate with their songs.
