Does Big Sean have a Case Against Ye?

What will the rapper protégé do in regard to his business relationship with his mentor?

They say “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.” In the case of Big Sean and Ye it should be “keep your enemies close and your former enemies closer.” Ye has resolved his beef with rapper Drake after a friendship turned toxic was restored again. Big Sean has been with GOOD Music for over fourteen years, and label boss Ye has yet to properly represent the multi platinum superstar.

Both Ye and Sean Don represent the classic dynamic of label heads offering pennies to the artist. Sean’s advance was reportedly $15,000. There has been tension over the ownership of masters within the framework of recording music. This is why the blues is the greatest form of musical expression next to classical and jazz. This is certainly a situation where all you want to do is observe the world and how it works, and then you're smacked in the face by reality.

Sean released albums, went on tours, and tried to be congenial with Ye. Instead of the pair bonding in a “bossman, underboss” relationship, things fell apart.

Ye still believes the worst thing he ever did was to sign Sean. He feels like Big Sean didn’t live up to the hype he had built up around himself, regardless of the platinum plaques.

For the two of them, they express irrationalism on a large scale. For Ye to not appreciate Big Sean’s talent, and to mock his choice of songs displays an incongruity embedded in Ye’s consciousness.

Big Sean could have been wiser to select a distribution deal and own his masters without any questions asked. Without the protection of reason, both men have fallen into the abyss of whim-worship.

Down the line, there will probably be hugs, and daps to try to dampen down the animus in both artists. Like in his song “Big Brother” clearing the air about his business relationship with JAY-Z, Ye may call the song “Little Brother” regarding Sean.

Whatever the scenario, this scene is shot like so many others because emotions are at the forefront. With feelings instead of thought guiding actions, all parties suffer. The total disagreements can be hashed out with respect, ego, dignity, and pride. Ye and Sean should look into some kind of business professional counseling.

While it is so easy to blame everything on the money, the truth is no amount of cash on earth can match integrity and justice.

With a new label, FF to Def, Sean might be poised to start the system over. He’ll run the company and expect artists to get deals that correspond to trinkets and pennies. He might do this, or he could just be honest and take his earnings from GOOD Music and establish an imprint that will aid the artist and allow everyone the money they deserve.

Ye ought to feel guilty for doing almost exactly what happened to him as captured in “Brother.” In unseemly fashion, he disrespected Sean more than JAY slighted him. Though he seemed unhinged on the “Drink Champs” show, a slightly intoxicated mind speaks sober truths. All of the hard times and struggles he went through with Sean showed to be for naught. He held up a gravestone decoration and proclaimed on his own marker, he would be there because he signed Big Sean.

In all, Ye owes Big Sean an apology just as much as Sean owes Ye. Remember, Big Sean didn’t have to take the paltry advance. He had the option of not choosing to sign and could have waited until a better deal came along. But it was the whim to just jump in the game. It may have cost Sean part of his musical life.
