A Whimsigoth Playlist

A blend of songs for a blended genre

By Samantha ParrishPublished 22 days ago • 3 min read

What is Whimsigoth? It's a goth style altered by themes of space and nature. Witch themes can also be a considered definition. When I see a Whimsigoth outfit, the first thing that comes to my mind is how it has a supernatural vibe. In my definition of Whimsigoth, it's a lighter version of the goth genre, a hippie version of goth.

Goth music and fashion is not just something to take lightly. There is a commitment to the themes that not many could make. Myself included. The fashion attire doesn't have a set-in-stone rule, it just includes anything that extends to ethereal. Whimsigoth outfits include: bellbottoms, bell sleeves, star patterns, flowers, etc. Anything that would be light and fun with darker colors.

Then a colorful version of goth called "Whimsigoth" was created. The name alone feels unique and alluring. When we think of whimsical, it feels light and when we hear goth, we know it's going to be dark. It's a genre for light and dark to exist together. As someone who loved the goth scene, this made me happy I could find a way to make it work for me.

But not only is the fashion branding but now I can't help but see some of the Whimisgoth themes in the music I listen to.

Now I have to say that I'm not labeling these bands other than the label they have for themselves. But as always, art is subjective for commentary and I believe these songs can be considered Whimsigoth.

Twin Tribes

One part of Whimsigoth is all about the celestial references. So it can be said that it is defined as other-worldly. Every scrap of the sound feels like it was made to be tailor-made to that range of goth. Twin Tribes follows the sounds of previous goth bands with an occult twist. Hence the other-worldly parallel As spooky as this band sounds, it fits the vibe of Whimsigoth very well.

Recommended Tunes 🔮

  • Monolith
  • Heart and Feather
  • The River

Ashbury Heights

This is more on the goth side but the music goes either way because the style of the lyrics makes it open for interpretation. I've been in love with this band for almost ten years and the unique gothic style the Swedish band has provided. But listening to them again, I can attestt that it can be stretched to say it can be considered a bop for Whimisigoth.

Recommended Tunes 🔮

  • Glow
  • Cry Havoc

The Cranberries

The Cranberries have become this sound staple for the Whimsigoth community. So it has to make an appearance here. The Late Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries has a beautiful vocal scale to make the songs to feel haunting and comforting at the same time. Whimsigoth vibes are usually light like you're floating, like you're in a dream. Can't you see yourself dressed up and dance to these songs?

Recommended Tunes 🔮

  • Zombie (of course)
  • Linger
  • Dreams

The Smiths

I have two words. The Craft. I think that speaks for itself.

But, I'll still talk about this band's impact on the whimsigoth community. I'm not as thorough with the discography of The Smiths but, I will say if it wasn't for The Craft I wouldn't have known about them, because of The Craft. I've seen a multitude of fashion creators showcase their Whimisgoth fashion with this song as the accompaniment for the vibe. It's safe to say that The Smiths has the vibe that has the perfect spell for any Whimsigoth vibe.

Recommended Tunes 🔮

  • How Soon is Now
  • Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac

Do you think I'd end the list with the mother of all Whimsigoth? The OG of ethereal music? The band with the white witch?

The fashion and music of Fleetwood Mac encapsulates the vibe of Whimsigoth. It was Whimsigoth before we knew what Whimsigoth was. I mention Stevie Nicks outside of Fleetwood Mac because she carried on the style for years making her the perfect icon for Whimsigoth (in my opinion of course). The vibes that Fleetwood Mac gives feel like you can put it in any genre and it's hard to imagine a Whimsigoth playlist without the ones that started it all.

Recommended Tunes 🔮

  • Dreams
  • Edge Of Seventeen (Stevie)
  • Tusk
  • Sisters Of The Moon (Stevie)
