Photos and Video courtesy of and with permission of NYSPHSAA After falling behind 7-0 to Niskayuna in the state semifinals at Middletown High School, Somers had no offensive answer through the first period, and Coach Anthony DeMatteo refused to hide his displeasure as the team switched sides at period’s end. “They came out strong, and we were back on our heels,” he put words to his concern. But the urgency DeMatteo expressed did not fall on deaf ears.

John Jay Faculty Relaxes with some Flag Football
Before an empty Contest Field on Thursday November 9, the John Jay faculty gathered for a coed game of flag football. Not seeking any attention, the ten players were just after a break in the action between seasons. But while there was a lot of laughter and good cheer, the contingent of mostly coaches actually lit it up.

Somers Upfront in 31-7 Victory over Averill
Video courtesy of and with permission of NYSPHSAA On Friday November 17, Somers faced Averill Park at Mahopac High School in the Regional Finals of the New York State Football Tournament, and Coach Anthony DeMatteo’s game plan didn’t go heavy on any sophisticated array of X’s and O’s. “We felt it was going to be physical, and we thought we could match that up with our guys upfront,” he said. A successful game plan that theTuskers didn’t wait to implement either.

Somers Takes Section One Championship with Victory Over Harrison
On Friday November 10, Somers faced Harrison for the Section One Championship and the game had as odd a start as possible. Despite the Eagle offense not getting the chance to touch the ball in the first quarter, the second seed scored two touchdowns. A pair of kickoff returns, Somers didn’t startle and ultimately went about their winning ways

John Jay Beats Greeley and Builds Legacy to end Season
On Friday November 2 John Jay suited up for Horace Greeley, and for seniors like Luca Duva, the finality was inescapable. “The last night of playing football, I left my heart on the field,” said the running back, and together, the Wolves didn’t let all the emotion go untapped.

On Friday October 27, Somers began their postseason defense of their New York State football title. Pelham on the slate, the number one standing seemed to hang over the medium sized crowd and put fans in a somewhat subdued mood. Somers Goes About Business as Usual in 31-13 Victory Over Brewster
Fans can certainly look at a schedule and know who are the stronger opponents and who are the weaker. So the game against Brewster on Friday October 6 probably had the home crowd feeling pretty comfortable. But while the notion may trickle down to the players, the mindset never changes at Somers, according to Matt Klee. “Every practice no matter who we are playing, we always give 110 percent,” said the lineman, and the diligence again translated to business as usual at the high school.

Somers Takes the Heat in 42-13 Victory over Clarkstown South
On Friday September 8, Somers began their home schedule and trailed Clarkstown South 6-0 with six minutes left in the half. An unexpected place for the state champs, events conspired to merit the slow start. “We had a tough practice week with the heat. We were out of our routine,” said Coach Anthony DeMatteo. “We’re a very structured program and we do things to the minute. So we were a little out of sorts - especially coming off a tough game last week.” But with a bang, the trunks got into the swing, and sanity ultimately came back to the Somers universe.

Somers Soccer Wins Section One Title
After beating Harrison 7-2 on Thursday October 26, Somers earned a berth in the Class AA finals versus Horace Greeley on Saturday. At Nyack High School, the undefeated, number one seed crossed the bridge and faced the possibility that they could lose some of the intensity to the traffic. The same went for a previous game that went into double overtime. No way, the girls had put in too much work to be distracted and simply stayed present, according to Julia Arbelaez.

John Jay Sweep Finishes Off Brewster to Open Volleyball Season
On Friday September 1, John Jay opened the season at home by jumping out to a 2-0 lead versus Brewster. A possible bad sign since the Wolves blew three such leads last year, and the collapses have still been a topic of conversation. “We talked a lot about cracking under pressure,” said Megan Flynn. So finishing was the outcome in mind, and taking the second ball for her team, Zoe Dollar praised her hitters for completing a storyline that always takes place at the net.
